Russell is a bad long term fit with GSW. But he's a decent fit in the short term given how much offense they've lost in Durant and Thompson.

Very GSW of them to have Thompson's projected return and Russell's trade eligibility occurring during the same window.

The Warriors might keep Russell the whole season because they are hard capped. They just don't have any cap room to take on salary. I'm not even sure they can trade multiple players without multiple players coming back because they won't have the cap room to sign a vet minimum player.

You dont need cap room to do vet min deals.

The warriors are hard capped from the sign and trade of Russell. From this part about hard caps, it doesn't sound like they can just sign a vet minimum player after a trade and exceed the the apron. I've seen reports that the warriors only have ~170k till they hit the apron once everyone is signed.

"If a team is hard-capped, it cannot exceed the Apron under any circumstance. If the team subsequently needs to sign a player (for example, to replace injured players) it must first create room under the Apron by waiving player(s) with non-guaranteed salary, waiving player(s) with guaranteed salary and utilizing the stretch provision, trading downward in salary, etc. A team that is hard-capped can sign players to non-guaranteed contracts for training camp or the regular season, but must rid themselves of such players before their salary would take the team above the Apron. A team subject to the hard cap can also sign players to Rest-of-Season contracts during the season, as long as the salary pro-ration keeps the team below the Apron."

I knew about the hard cap but didn’t think about how it would affect a trade. I guess that means Clippers, Portland and OKC would be prime trading partners for Love.

You can take OKC off that list. Now that they have traded Paul George and seem to be on the verge of trading Russell Westbrook, the Thunder seem to be going full rebuild. The Clippers were an option before they traded all those picks to the Thunder.

Trade Love, Thompson, and Smith to OKC for some of those picks and to keep Westbrook happy so they don’t have to trade him. It’s back to a two star per team league. Westbrook and a healthy Love could at least be relevant.

Westbrook and Love have zero chance of getting out of the first round. And there's no way OKC would pay that much more tax for such a crappy result.

With OKC going full rebuild, they aren’t trading those picks. Like the Cavs, they are now in asset collection mode. Unlike the Cavs, the Thunder have an absolute embarrassment of riches, thanks to the PG13 trade.

Are we sure they are going full rebuild?

I'm not sure they are. The best way to get rid of all the players that don't fit around Westbrook is to pretend they are going into a rebuild and dump them for assets. Presti can then turn those assets into better fitting players. I won't believe OKC is going into a rebuild until Westbrook is traded. If they are just taking back expirings, trade exceptions, and assets, they can flip the switch into a buyer at any moment.

It sure seems like it. There are strong rumors that they are going to trade Westbrook and there’s also been rumors that they will look to trade Gallinari
