Perhaps these buyouts with multiple years left on contracts will be getting more common now. I'm really curious to see how much money Kemba gave back. Hopefully it's a decent amount, so it sets a precedent that we can try to use on Love.

I can't wait until the next strike where NBA players lose their guaranteed contracts they fought so hard for.

Dude in Hamburg Germany fell behind on his rent payments. All attempts to contact him failed. Police broke into his apartment to find him sitting in a chair facing his TV. He'd been dead for five years when his bank account ran out and auto payment of rent failed.

That'll be X waiting for the NBAPA to give up guaranteed contracts

Hard for them to keep guaranteed contracts when they're asking for buyouts after a year.

I'm assuming there's going to be some provision in the new CBA where a player is only eligible for a certain percentage of their salary in a buyout. The team gets fucked 100% of the time, whether it's having to pay a player that didn't play up to expectations, paying a guy to play somewhere else, or paying a guy that pouts and doesn't want to be a part of the team.

Mentioned this in a thread a while back, but I'd be interested to figure out some buyout & trade option in the new CBA. In my head the way this would work is a player could be bought out and traded on a new contract that has a maximum length of his current contract, and then the team trading for the bought out player would have to send assets back and pay a portion of the buyout (this doesn't count against tax). So if we're talking Love, let's say the Nets wanted to sign him to a 2 year, $16 mill contract. That means the Nets need to send back salary to match AND pay a portion of the $44 mill buyout beyond the contract they gave him. This way the Cavs clear some cap space and have a chance to recoup something on a player that's deliberately tanking.

I don't think it'll happen, but I think something like that helps the team and league in general. You might get several teams competing for a guy in a buyout & trade scenario which drives up the return for the team trading the player.

Clippers convinced stand-up comedian and NBA player Blake Griffin to sign a 5 year $173m deal and used the following to lure him.

Clippers didn't honor their promise and Detroit somehow thought this was a good idea. I think organization should be held accountable for their poor decision making and shouldn't be taken off the hook either. Sure, it sucks watching Blake suddenly discover his hops again after joining the Nets but the Pistons traded for a disgruntled player (who actually played really well for 2 seasons). The Pistons did a full rebuild, acquired great assets now and were able to bottom out and grab Cade Cunningham 1st overall. I think teams shouldn't do a buyout unless they get the deal they want and it's up to them to accept the amount of money they want shaved off. They still have the leverage and can tell a player to go home or simply practice without any hope of getting playing time.
