We talk about the problems with the roster and the players and how they fit....and look man. One MAJOR problem is 30 million dollars of our salary cap allotment is sitting on the bench every night.
Make that $60 million when you include Drummond.

If you told me before the season we'd be playing without Drummond, Love, Nance, Porter, and Delly I would not be extremely optimistic. But we have Allen and next year we should have a top five pick plus over $20 million to spend on a free agent or two after we dump Dre's contract and sign Allen.

Where is this $20M coming from?

So, the argument here is that the Cavs could have had what exactly instead?

They were paying JR 14 million to stay home.

They were paying John Henson over 11 million to read the Wall Street Journal on the end of the bench.

Love made Dan Gilbert's money while no other player of consequence else was going to sign here or agree to a trade here. Who was their best signing at this point... Dave Nwaba, probably?

Rebuilding is tough on fans, but probably tougher on players. Hopefully he gets through his health setbacks and plays again.

Healthy players.

What you guys think we need from Kevin Love and what he may be able to provide are all fantasy.

Because right up there is the Kevin Love you're gonna keep getting. Injured, injured, and injured some more.

Lord help us we need to find some way to free up that cap space. That 30 million a year is just hurling itself into the void.

And yet some want to double down and get that bum Wiggins to tie up another $30 million.

I was in favor of the Love deal. I thought being the star again, he would easily regain his value and we'd eventually be able to move him later for something half-way decent. In the interim, he'd help make the team watchable.

It's been a freaking disaster to this point. I don't know if he's just milking it these days because he doesn't feel like playing on a bad team or if he's really this injury prone. Doesn't matter much either, I guess.

I’m no doctor, but if you’ve ever tried to “go back to normal” after rehabbing an injury, a little soreness is to be expected and not necessarily a bad thing. That said, I’m never betting on Love to stay healthy for a long period of time.

According to spotrac.com the Cavs' salary commitments drop from $126.4 million this year to $89.2 million next year, a decline of $37.2 million. The decrease is due to the expiring contracts of Drummond, McGee, Allen, and Dellavedova.

I'm assuming we'll need $15 million or so to resign Allen and McGee. Delly will be replaced by a second round pick but his contract is inconsequential. So subtract $15 million from $37 million and the Cavs should have around $20-22 million next year to shop for a free agent or two.

What I forgot is if they have a top five draft pick, which they should, he'll get about $7 million which is a little more than Okoro is making. So call it $15 million available for a free agent upgrade.

Some of the players who are making $13-15 million this year: Terrance Ross, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Will Barton, Justice Winslow, Kelly Oubre Jr, and Thaddeus Young. I'm not saying these guys are on expiring contracts, I'm just pointing out what kind of player you might be able to get for $15 million.

Looking at the available free agents, I'd love to get PF Bobby Portis of the Bucks. He's 6'10", 258, just turned 26 years old and in his 7th season. This year he's shooting 54.8% overall and 48.4% on 3's - both career highs. Due to Giannis and Middleton he's only getting 21 minutes per game and he's making $3.6 million. We could easily double that.

I would move Nance to the 3 if we sign Portis. I love that super-sized lineup we saw last year with Drummond/TT at center and Love/Nance at the forwards. I'm not counting on Love for anything more than a handful of games here and there.

I'd also move Okoro to the 2 where his size would be an advantage rather than a disadvantage. We'd get bigger at the 2, 3, and 4.

We'd end up with Allen and McGee at the 5, Portis and Love at the 4 (with Nance available if necessary), Nance and Windler at the 3, and Okoro, Sexton, and Garland splitting the minutes at the two guard positions. Cedi, Dotson and Prince would be out of the rotation unless there were injuries.

We would still have our #1 draft pick to slot in somewhere. Cade Cunningham would be the ideal pick, IMO.

You're using salary commitments, and not salary cap. The Cavaliers are *over* the cap of $109M (I believe) this year. The 2021-22 Salary Cap is projected to be $112M. So, using your $89M, $15M for Allen would take them to $104M. Assuming the $7M for the lottery pick, they're at $111M. Adding, literally, NO ONE else means they have $1M to spend, not $20M.

With that starting lineup lineup you could afford to give out 100$ bills to the crowd if they score 70 points a night.

I’d read Allen’s cap hold prior to signing his extension would be about 9 million.

So if you could trade Cedi for an expiring and waive Dotson’s non gtd salary for next year, couldn’t you have about 15-17M in cap space to use, sign a player and THEN do Allen’s extension via Bird Rights

Assuming you're correct, the Cavaliers are at $89M. Sending Cedi for an expiring takes them to $80M. Allen's cap hold is $9M. A first round pick is $7M. That takes them to $96M. That puts them at ~$16M in space. But that means you're resigning *none* of the guys on your team. It also means the Cleveland Cavaliers, whose best free agent signing in franchise history is corpse of Larry Hughes, are banking on that changing.
