Where is this $20M coming from?
According to spotrac.com the Cavs' salary commitments drop from $126.4 million this year to $89.2 million next year, a decline of $37.2 million. The decrease is due to the expiring contracts of Drummond, McGee, Allen, and Dellavedova.
I'm assuming we'll need $15 million or so to resign Allen and McGee. Delly will be replaced by a second round pick but his contract is inconsequential. So subtract $15 million from $37 million and the Cavs should have around $20-22 million next year to shop for a free agent or two.
What I forgot is if they have a top five draft pick, which they should, he'll get about $7 million which is a little more than Okoro is making. So call it $15 million available for a free agent upgrade.
Some of the players who are making $13-15 million this year: Terrance Ross, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Will Barton, Justice Winslow, Kelly Oubre Jr, and Thaddeus Young. I'm not saying these guys are on expiring contracts, I'm just pointing out what kind of player you might be able to get for $15 million.
Looking at the available free agents, I'd love to get PF Bobby Portis of the Bucks. He's 6'10", 258, just turned 26 years old and in his 7th season. This year he's shooting 54.8% overall and 48.4% on 3's - both career highs. Due to Giannis and Middleton he's only getting 21 minutes per game and he's making $3.6 million. We could easily double that.
I would move Nance to the 3 if we sign Portis. I love that super-sized lineup we saw last year with Drummond/TT at center and Love/Nance at the forwards. I'm not counting on Love for anything more than a handful of games here and there.
I'd also move Okoro to the 2 where his size would be an advantage rather than a disadvantage. We'd get bigger at the 2, 3, and 4.
We'd end up with Allen and McGee at the 5, Portis and Love at the 4 (with Nance available if necessary), Nance and Windler at the 3, and Okoro, Sexton, and Garland splitting the minutes at the two guard positions. Cedi, Dotson and Prince would be out of the rotation unless there were injuries.
We would still have our #1 draft pick to slot in somewhere. Cade Cunningham would be the ideal pick, IMO.
