He still has a candle in the window for JB. Sorta like Berry with Watson

Now we can all see the full genius of Koby Altman in all its glory.

He saw that Brooklyn Nets team that won games (and cost us Luka) and knew there was gold in that thar hills. So he carefully plans to pick up two underrated players: Jarrett Allen and Caris Levert. But he also has an eye on another prize which has gone to Golden State for Jedi Master training.

Koby drafts Garland and Mobley, goes for broke with the Mitchell trade, picks up Strus and Niang for shooting, and carefully develops sneaky good white boys Dean Wade and Sam Merrill. He also picks up another below the radar guy - Ty Jerome.

So the head coach and team disappoints vs the Knicks. Dan talks to Koby and asks if they should replace the coach. Koby says "nah nah Dan, we need to wait until school is finished in the Bay Area."

A year later, Koby and Dan pull the trigger, get Kenny who has reached Yoda rank in the Jedi Order, and sign the core pieces, including Jarrett at a nice price.

Now Kenny unlocks all the players, he's back with his Brooklyn Boys, and now we're playing Blitzkugel.

Koby is a fucking genius. Exec of the year as things stand. He inherited a roster without any tradeable assets (except Bron and Kyrie) and now we're one of the best teams in the NBA.

If you don't think he's been incredible, just look at teams like the Pistons. They've been in purgatory for like 15 years. It's wild.

I remember Jazz fans getting cocky because of the Mitchell trade. Danny Ainge is massively overrated. That team is in shambles.

I was thinking this exact thing when i saw that the Jazz were 0-5 to start the season. This is year 3 of their rebuild and there is no path forward at this point.

and they still haven't found a buyer for Lauri

(I wish somehow the Cavs could get him back)

The other aspect of his tenure is he has been superb at avoiding problem players and, better yet, removing the weeds.

He got KPJ outta here right after extending him. He took the hit because he didn’t want that guy on the team.

We all liked Collin Sexton’s enthusiasm, personality and fun play. He made watching the Cavaliers bearable for a few seasons. I really wanted to see him succeed. @Randolphkeys said he would be a sixth man on a championship team which at the time looked like a step down for him. Would he gets minutes on our current team if he was here instead of CPJ? I don’t think so, and any salary he consumed would be wasted.

He’s also been total class taking care of guys like Kevin Love when that got messed up. That paid off when Kevin told Max this was a good place to play. Ricky Rubio was also highly complimentary of our team management.

This is a really good franchise and the players know that and say so.

I'm hoping they can get him once this contract is up and he is devalued again. At some point wins have to matter

Good memory there. I'm not sure I meant that comment on Sexton as the high praise you framed it. Sexton plays losing basketball. He's the size of a point guard and isn't switchable as a defender, yet doesn't share the ball well. Heck of a scorer, I just disagreed with the role he saw for himself at the NBA level. Just this week, he has been moved out of the starting lineup in place of Jordan Clarkson - a sixth man who looks for his own shot in his own right.

I was pretty happy when we flipped Collin for Donovan. Sexton imagines himself as a Stephon Marbury type star but he still has yet to make a playoff series.

A big part of the Mitchell Sexton trade was Ainge hoping Mitchell leaves and the Cavs imploded, giving him years of top 5 picks.....well, that didn't work out. I hope he enjoys the 30 pick in the draft.

I agree with that, I have spent years begging the Cavs not to trade with Ainge. He with holds injuries, personal issues, anything he has to hide in order to win the trade. In this case, he didn't know Donovan's personality as well as he thought. Nice revenge for screwing the Cavs over in the Irving trade.

I'd also like to say I defend LeVert more than I should because I still see him as the rich man's Collin Sexton. He is much more versatile as a defender, he is a better passer, and yet still fills the role I thought Sexton would be destined to play. He comes off the bench to disrupt a set defense and attack poor defensive matchups.

Actually I remember you comparing him to Monta Ellis and saying he would be a sixth man when he was a starter for us. Compared to the Board (including me) you were downplaying him. As it happens he wasn't and isn't even that good. He's a very marginal NBA player.

I don't. Lauri held his own at the 3 during the regular season, but the playoffs are a whole different animal.

He's a great player though, credit to Koby for signing him when no one else was going after him.

Yep! When the Warriors started promoting Monta locally as "the new Baron Davis" I shook my head. The undersized one on one scorer isn't a franchise player.

Sure enough, Steph didn't need much time to put Monta on the trade block. Their owners were booed for trading Monta, but that's just another example of a fanbase who values one on one scoring way too much.

Anyways, a trade was in place for Okoro and the Nets this off-season but details of the new CBA got in the way. Bobby Marks almost reported it and backed off. That tells me the Cavs should see some shakeup by the deadline.

It’s nice that this worst case scenario didn’t play out. It was a lot of the calculus and consternation about the trade, being excited to have Mitchell but knowing the risk that he could potentially leave via FA or trade beforehand.

Being able to now frame the trade very confidently for the next few years that the 2025, 2027, and likely 2029 picks will all be in the mid to high 20’s + same with pick swaps. Just don’t see a scenario in 2026 and 2028 where Utah has a better record than us and swaps the picks

So while life still takes its twists and turns, it’s a lot easier to feel pretty damn good about the cost paid for Mitchell with him set to play here for 5-6 or potentially more years in total
