MAC Basketball

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So I take it you have nothing to say OSU has rebuffed Akron many times?

So tell Akron to go get Pitt, West Virginia (Huggins ties doesn't help?), Villanova, Memphis, Rutgers, any of the teams in the area around us. I get why Butler, Dayton etc. may not want to come because that is a serious threat. MSU is not scared to play Akron. Even if they did lose, it doesn't hurt them like losing to Penn State hurts them. So that is not a real concern.

When you play in a conference that is as bad as the MAC is, you have to do something to schedule tough teams out side of a pre-season tournament. I loved the Creighton game. But we can't have Creighton, then play Oakland, Coastal Carolina, ArkPB, etc..

Miami used to load their schedules with tough teams and come ready to play ball for the MACC without a scary schedule because they wanted to be tourney ready.

This whole 20 games win streak is meaningless with the crap of schedules they roll out. And it is also why nobody cares to follow them or go to the games.

Ohio had over 12k people for the Akron game, Akron can barely sell out the Kent game in a 5k seat arena. Another reason why the board probably won't let them get a new arena without a ton more fundraising.

I love OU and the Convo, but there's some things to be said.

1.) Athens - there's nothing to do there other then party and a few other things. Watching basketball is one of the other.
2.) Students get in free - not sure about Akron?
3.) 2/3 MAC tourny's with a sweet 16 and an upset over Georgetown helps. The last year of the team that Groce built.
4.) DJ Cooper, watching someone who literally is one of the best to ever enter that program helps.
5.) Give aways, not sure what Akron does to attract students, but give aways are huge at OU.

I'm also not sure how strong Akron's student section is. The O-Zone is one of the best and deepest in the MAC.

Just for you, Mac.

“We have to go into the hornet’s nest like Butler has, and VCU has, and show that we can beat those people,” he said. “But again, we don’t get as many opportunities as they do. And they get some at home that we don’t get. We’re trying to build our name so eventually we get home-and-home with those people, even if it’s not our home, if it’s Quicken Loans Arena and their home. That’s good enough for us. That’s what we need to do to take the next step."

Let's go OU!

I graduated with Jon Smith, didn't know he was at OU until last night, thought he was still at St. Louis. Good to see him getting some quality minutes in big time games.

I have absolutely no idea what will happen tonight, but I expect a close one. I think OU pulls it out in the end but hope I'm wrong. If Abreu wasn't stupid and was still there I would pick Zips +10. Have to play with what you have though, excuses don't matter come 6:30 tonight.

Hats off to Akron. They were the better team this year, without a doubt. They deserved it.

I don't know if Groce affected them that much, but OU just didn't have it mentally this year. Maybe we can host an NIT game, I don't know.

Hopefully Akron can win a game in the tourney. I'll be pulling for them.

Pretty decent crowd for the game, Ohio had some really good support. Akron fans were typical with their blah mentality. 12k+, MAC should be happy with that.

Dont know what it is about the second half with these Akron teams, but they are a different animal in that second half. Dambrot needs to get the ball out of Harney's hands as the PG and let Diggs run the one in the pinch. Cool to see Akron dancing, going to bereally interesting to see who they get in the tourney. Hopefully they aren't suckered with a 13 seed or lower, would be really clutch for a 10-11 seed but little to no chance of that happening.

Pathetic showing from OU. Congrats to Akron, clearly the better team overall and their size really hurt OU and their lack of rebounding

What an effort by Akron tonight. They're simply the better team this year, and played their asses off to make sure they got the job done in winning the MAC Tourney. Ohio's a damn good team, and Akron took them out all 3 times...didn't see that coming.

For Akron, it's time to look ahead to the Big Dance. For OU, it's making an NIT run.

OU fans - what do you think about OU in 2013-2014? You are losing some major pieces in Cooper, Offutt, Keely, and Baltic.

On the one hand, I think we know they won't be nearly as good next year. At the same time though, and I can only speak for myself, I think they will be pretty good/contend for the MAC crown again. Christian was clearly playing as much for next year as he was this year with his rotations. Smith, Hall, Wilkins, and Taylor all played big minutes this season, and obviously Kellogg has that NCAA experience. I don't think the dropoff will be as significant as some would expect.

A few thoughts from last night's game...

- OU students showed both how clever and how classless they can be in span of ten minutes. The "Where is Abreu?" chant followed by the "He's in jail" response was good. I'm sure the Akron players and coaches picked up on it...the fans certainly did. Unfortunately, they lacked creativity and class when they chanted "Zeke's a bitch" multiple times when he was at the free throw line. There's just no room for that kind of garbage. I was embarrassed for them. Kudos to the Alron students for their response to the "Where is Abreu?" pregame chants, chanting "Where is Cooper?" in the final minutes of the game.

- I still cannot believe Cooper's disappearing act. Such a great player, especially in big games. I kept telling my friend next to me that he was going to start taking over...it just never happened. My respect for Cooper's game is so high that a 16 point lead still had me nervous...I know what he's capable of. Just a terrible night for DJ.

- OU's cold shooting night was shocking. 1 for 20 from 3PT range? I'd bet that's a school record (and not in a good way).

- I'll be curious to see OU next year with Cooper, Keely, Baltic, Offutt all gone. I'd imagine they'll take a step back.

- Kudos to Cooper for his congratulatory tweet to the Zips and to Ivo Blatic for coming out after he dressed to congratulate Keith Dambrot and the Zips players.

- Keith Dambrot's Coach of the Year award is incredibly well-deserved. So much adversity this year and yet here they were, back in Cleveland on Saturday, playing for the MAC Title for the 7th straight season.

- Zeke Marshall has had a helluva run at Akron. Great player, great kid...a wonderful representative for the University of Akron and the Zips basketball program. I hope he slips into the 2nd round.

- Demetrius Treadwell is an absolute beast. I feel bad for the MAC that they have to deal with him for two more years. There's NBA potential in his game.

- Hoping for a 12 seed, although we'll probably get a 13 or a 14.

- It feels damn good to be a Zip today

Um..you call yourself an Akron fan, and a knowledgeable one at that?

Diggs hasnt been on the team all year.

I noticed that too but was going to let it go haha

Meant Chauncey.

I happened to be talking to somebody who mentioned how nice this team would have been this year had Diggs still been around, it's a shame. He would have played a huge role this year. Poor timing.

Tough draw for the Zips to get VCU without a PG. Can probably bet on Harney not bringing the rock up much in the first round.
