MAC Tournament Predictions

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And that's the problem. It's sad when fans are OK w first round NIT losses while other teams in the conferences make statements outside of the conference.

But again, that's your school and if you want to sulk in mediocrity, then I guess that's what Zips fans find acceptable.

I think it's pathetic.

When did I say I was OK with them losing to Northwestern? I'd rather take a chance on and be patient with a guy who has already elevated the program once to do so again when he's reached the MAC Title game six straight years, winning two of the last four, than hire someone who might do better and would likely bolt after a year or two if he did, putting us back at square one. Aside from OU, who wouldn't want to be the the Zips' position in the MAC right now? They are on their way to taking that next step...like Butler, we just need to be patient.

If you find that pathetic, great. Good for you. You obvious to me that you don't know this program, aren't a fan of this program, and just don't like Keith Dambrot. You're entitled to those opinions, and instead of ripping you like you've decided to do by calling Zips fans who disagree with you "pathetic", I'm just going to bow out of this one before I stoop to that level.

Have a good weekend.

OHIO! SWEET SIXTEEN!!!

Everyone back next year too! FUCKIN A!

Yeah, what a tough pill to swallow.

The coach might leave after delivering 3 NCAA wins, 2 MAC titles and a Sweet 16 appeearance.

Whoa is me.

Is that the Joey Lawrence version of that idiom?

In all seriousness, he's a helluva coach and has an incredible relationship with Cooper. Don't underestimate the job he's done in Athens. I think they'll be OK with the talent they have coming back, but it will certainly be an adjustment if/when he moves on.

I don't think he's going anywhere, at least until after next year. He waited a long time to take his first head coaching job because he didn't feel the other jobs offered were the right fit. With literally the entire roster returning while adding an athletic big transferring from Missouri, this team will be preseason top-25 without a doubt. You don't leave a stacked team coming off (at least) a Sweet Sixteen run. Groce and his family absolutely love Athens, the community, and of course the University. He has a special bond with Cooper in particular, and I have to think he at least wants to see him through to the end of his career.

Honestly, the only current opening I think he would jump at if offered is Illinois. Obviously has a ton of connections in that recruiting base, was an assistant in the Big 10, and would be going to a school that already had a bunch of tradition that could be successful almost immediately. No way would he go to Nebraska, where he doesn't have many connections to the area and where it would take a looong time to build anything of significance.

Groce has never been about jumping at the first opportunity that comes across his face. I remember when Groce was initially hired at Ohio, how he talked about Matta advising him on his career, and the fact that he steered him toward the Ohio job because it was a great fit. From everything I've read about Groce and heard from people that know him, he's a very passionate guy who's main goal isn't getting a bigger contract. He wants to leave a legacy. I'm not saying he's not going to leave Ohio at some point, but he's not going to leave for another mid-major job or a BCS that's a graveyard for mid-major coaches (ex: Nebraska). When he does eventually leave, it'll be for a position where he can compete for a national title within the first few years.

GO OHIO!

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how much he loves Athens when a BCS school is going to double your salary. It would be nice to say that he loves the place and wants to stay, but very rarely does a coach turn down that kind of money. And saying Ohio is a pre-season top 25 is a stretch as well...they have a very solid group coming back, but Ohio is never going to get that kind of respect. If they show out in a couple of solid early season games against some name opponents, then I can see them sneaking in.

If nothing else, they will start the season in the "others receiving votes categories." At this point, the only BCS job worth taking is Illinois. Nebraska is a garbage job and I don't see them becoming more than a middle of the road BIG 10 team no matter what you do. Groce will wait for a job where he can legitimately win. Mark Few, Brad Stevens, and Shaka Smart are just a few in recent history that have turned down lucrative offers to stay with their current school. Of course Shaka could be leaving VCU very soon, but that would be for a school where he could potentially compete for a national title on a fairly regular basis.

Many MAC programs as well as other mids offered Groce a head coaching job prior to Ohio, but he waited for what he believed was the right opportunity, and clearly the man was right. I wouldn't expect him to suddenly change that line of thinking because someone threw a little money at him.

This is directly from a Nebraska article about Groce as a candidate for the opening at Nebraska.
Why wouldn't Groce make sense?
His interest level might not be as high as you'd think, even though he'd receive a significant pay increase from his current base salary of $250,000.

Except Groce

Might not be true, he promised DJ Cooper he'd stay all 4 years if Coop committed. Of course Groce could go back on his word, but he preaches loyalty to all his players. Not to mention after meeting him when he was first hired, he seemed genuinely interested in developing Ohio's program into a winning program.

The thing about Groce is he is a heavy recruiter. It's how he was able to get so many talented kids to transfer including Bassett and now Offett. I remember the days of O-Zone meetings and he'd not attend majority of the time because he was recruiting. We met him a few times and he always thanked us at the end of games. Something, he probably still does. He also got the players behind us to thank us.

I'm not saying he's definitely going to leave, but I'm pretty sure every single college head coach promises recruits that they aren't going anywhere. It's going to be interesting to see what both he and Shaka Smart do this offseason.

I wouldn't be shocked if he left, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he gave it another year knowing Coop will still be around. Plus he has a chance to break a record with his first recruiting class. Groce had received many offers before coming to Ohio University as well.

NCAA Tournament: The Ohio Bobcats are the coolest team in the Sweet Sixteen
By: Kels Dayton

The Ohio Bobcats are the coolest team in the Sweet Sixteen.

They’ve got a point guard that looks like a young Michael Jackson and plays like a veteran Mark Jackson– grown man-style.

They’ve got a school president who was in the locker room after the Bobcats defeated South Florida in the third round, giving a spirited congratulatory speech and shouting, “The best team won! The best team won!” as his players clapped and cheered him on.

They’ve even got CBS analyst Clark Kellogg’s son, Nick, although whether or not that adds to their coolness is debatable.

And in an era when anybody can beat anybody and Butler and VCU can reach the Final Four, Ohio stands as the lone mid-major left in this turbulent tournament.

“This is amazing,” said guard Walter Offut, who scored 21 points in the Bobcats’ 62-56 win over South Florida. “I pinched myself coming here today. It’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Ohio (29-7, 11-5 Mid-American Conference) has won 10 of 11 games, and certainly looked like the best team in the gym in their first two tournament games.

The Bobcats led the entire way in their 65-60 second-round evisceration of 4th-seeded Michigan, which won a share of the Big Ten regular season championship. Then they completely controlled the pace of play against gritty South Florida in the round of 32, scoring 41 points in the second half against a Bulls team that only gives up 51 points per game.

“I’m so proud of these guys, the way they stuck together and believed in what we’re doing as a team,” said head coach John Groce, who guided Ohio to a first-round win over Georgetown in 2010. ”I think our guys have a chip on their shoulder. [We] look forward to playing on the big stage against quality competition, and I think it shows,” he said.

What makes them even cooler is the fact that they can focus even after coach confiscated their cell phones.

“Two years ago, after the first round win I felt like I really didn’t do a good enough job of helping them avoid distractions,” Groce said.

So after giving them a few minutes to text and tweet after the Bobcats upset Michigan in the Round of 64 on Friday, Groce rounded up his players’ phones.

“Not one guy complained,” he said.” And that’s how I know that this team is locked in. Not a single guy complained.”

The MAC champions are used to balling without all the attention, anyway. Point guard D.J. Cooper is one of the best players in America who never shows up on your T.V. screen.

Cooper, who leads the team with 14.6 points and 5.7 assists per game said that he received a few scholarship offers from the big-time schools, but that he was always their second option.

“It seemed like everybody wanted me if they couldn’t get somebody else,” Cooper said. “Baylor was going after John Wall, and they started calling me a little bit after he left,” (Wall signed with Kentucky). “I wanted to go someplace where I was their first option.”

So the 5-11, 148-pound guard from Chicago chose mid-major Ohio University, and immediately helped lead the Bobcats to their most successful three-year run in program history.

Cooper averaged 13.5 points, 5.9 assists and 5.4 rebounds per game in his freshman season in 2010, and took charge late in March, leading the Bobcats to a stirring MAC championship as the ninth-seed in the conference tournament. Ohio came into the 2010 MAC Tournament at 7-9 in conference play, but scored three upset victories to crash the Big Dance as a 14-seed.

The Bobcats weren’t done there, though.

With Cooper leading the way (23 points, 8 assists), Ohio punked 3rd-seeded Georgetown in round one of the 2010 NCAAs, leading by as many as 17 points and cruising to a 97-83 win.

The Bobcats missed the Big Dance last season but have picked up right where they left off, this time winning in round two and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1964.

The team’s 28 wins so far this season are a school record, and Ohio will have a chance to reach the Elite Eight when it takes on North Carolina on Friday.

Coach John Groce’s belief in Cooper has paid off big-time, as the point guard has remained with Ohio U. even after claiming he received calls from bigger schools such as Tennessee and Baylor, among others, who were trying to poach him away from Athens.

Tennessee and Baylor have denied these claims, which would constitute as NCAA violations.

“I didn’t think about leaving,” Cooper said. “It’s about loyalty. I’m sticking with coach Groce. He believed in me from the start.”

That seems to be a theme with the rest of the Bobcats players.

Groce took a chance on 6-3 junior guard Walter Offut, too.

Offut spent a season at the big state school in Columbus before transferring to Athens in search of more playing time.

“[There's] a lot of roads I could have taken,” Offut said. “I think God had me be here at Ohio University. It’s been an amazing journey, probably the best thing that ever happened in my life.”

“I have coach Groce to thank for that,” he said.

“Oh man. Coach Groce is a genius, man,” said forward Devaughn Washington. “That’s it. He’s just a genius.”

“I love you coach!” shouted one of the Bobcats during school president Roderick McDavis’ postgame speech.

Groce nearly broke out in tears.

Yeah, this is the coolest team in the Sweet 16.

It's stories like these that lead me to believe one more year.

I'm loving the way my Bobcats are playing in the tournament so far. I just hope Baltic learns that jumpers from a half step inside the 3pt line aren't high percentage for him. Every time he shoots it, I groan.

I'm not saying he's definitely going to leave, but I'm pretty sure every single college head coach promises recruits that they aren't going anywhere. It's going to be interesting to see what both he and Shaka Smart do this offseason.

Shaka Smart has turned down the Illinois job. Of course, he is getting paid 7 figures, which Groce isn't.

I don't know, my gut tells me Groce stays. My head tells me guys rarely stay. I hope he comes back. This team is going to be loaded.

That's the big difference. Here's a thought: how much would OU be willing to pay to keep him?

I have no idea, but I can't see them going to seven figures.

There has already been a lot of issues about the amount of support athletics is getting (most of which is completely unfounded, but academics are always quick to pin a lack of money on athletics), so significantly increasing Groce's pay would be very controversial.
