Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Not impressed: has trouble getting off a shot against the interior defense when he drives and he blew some easy passes that a PG should be able to make like a lob to an open player on the break. I think he's been given more leeway from posters because his comparison has been the awful Quinn

Today was his first start in SL, and for part of the time, he was playing with a different rotation of players. I agree that he looked pretty weak going to the basket today. Looked pretty good on defense, including some savvy plays down the stretch. I think he is deferring too much, in part because Dion wants the ball. But he has some skills that suggest that he would be an upgrade on Quinn, which is the initial thing we need from him.

Interested to see if he gets heavy minutes going forward -- the Cavs took control of today's game (at least for awhile) with him on the bench for a lot of it.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Sort of interesting how he worded this. Do the Cavs not want him on the 15 man?

I think they want him on the 15 man, it's just Lloyd & the Cavs being realistic in that he won't see much time here behind Kyrie & Jack, so he'd spend a good portion of the year in Canton.

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

Talking about Dellavedova, he reminds me of a kid a few years back who came out... very good at a smaller school, led the NCAA in assists and was a good scorer... high basketball IQ and ability, but just didn't have the athletic ability to succeed in the NBA... Jared Jordan out of Marist College.

I loved watching Jared Jordan play in college. He was a Bob Hurley Sr. kind of point guard.

Higgins didn't seem to have a very confident handle. Reminded me of Boobie in that regard.

Mate, we don't have an accent, you Americans do.

.

I have been in this argument before. Who does a robot sound more like? A 'merican or an Aussie?

Re: Welcome Matthew Dellavedova

I think a few people are missing the point with Matthew Dellavedova. The guy is looking for a job as a third PG where his job will be to to distribute good ball to guys like Waiters - Brown has stated he wants Dion as a specialist two only. I am sure that Delly's brief has been to give other guys clean looks, play the pick and roll and run the D.
There is no doubt that this has been successful, when Waiters scored 26 points and defended strong against the Spurs. He has absolutely lifted the team.
He is only shooting and driving to draw the defense out and give his team mates good ball. Dellavedova has never taken so few shots in all of his College games, including when he was a freshman and St Marys went to the Sweet 16 and playing for Australia at the Olympics. He is absolutely following instructions. I know what you are saying, how can a player that follows the coaches instructions, and their only priority is to win fit into the Cavs roster ?
I will be very interested to see the game against the Heat, as I am sure the coaches will lift the shackles and let him show what he can do shooting. The guy shot 40% from he arc in college, and improved every stat with each new year.
I think people can get too caught up in what he can't do for the Cavs, rather than looking at what he will do.

Cavs Give Matthew Dellavedova NBA Opportunity

July 31st, 2013 Robert White

Australia’s next NBA hopeful, Matthew Dellavedova, will have a further chance at making an NBA roster in the coming months after receiving an invite to the Cleveland Cavaliers pre-season training camp.

Dellavedova was passed upon by all 30 NBA teams in June’s NBA draft after having spent a four-year career at St Mary’s college in California.

The 22-year-old had an outstanding career in the NCAA, but was overlooked on Draft night because NBA teams believed the 191cm Dellavedova wasn’t quick enough to defend the ultra-athletic point guards of the world’s top basketball league.

"Cleveland is looking for a third point guard and I have a shot at it," Dellavedova told News Limited earlier in the week.

The St Mary’s record holder in scoring, assists, games played and free throw percentage, Dellavedova had the opportunity to play for the Cavs’ Summer League team last month.

“I thought I did OK,” he said of his time in Las Vegas.

“I played my role pretty well, trying to get other people shots.”

“I really focused on my defence," Dellavedova said. “I know what the perception is about me defending quick guards. I thought I was really good defensively.”

Dellavedova has already had the opportunity to talk to Cavs coach Mike Brown about his role.

"I talked to Coach Brown a bit," he added.

"He told me what he was looking for, that third point guard to push Irving and Waiters in practice
," he said, referring to young stars Kyrie Irving and Dion Waters.

Dellavedova started for the Australian Boomers at last year’s London Olympics.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

My concern regarding that is that he is too slow to really make Kyrie and Dion work defensively. But it's hard not to root for the kid.

A little more from a different Aussie paper:

Dellavedova a step closer to joining Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA
By Adam Bourke
Aug. 2, 2013, 10:52 p.m.

MATTHEW Dellavedova is one step away from realising his NBA dream after the Cleveland Cavaliers invited him to attend their final training camp in October.

The 22-year-old impressed the Cavs in last month’s NBA Summer League in Las Vegas and is in the running to clinch one of the final spots on the club’s 15-man roster.

“Training camp starts October 1, but I’ll be going back in early September to do some more training with them,’’ Dellavedova said yesterday.

“My agent is sorting out some details with them at the moment and I’ll know more in the next few days.

“I’m pretty sure the club is going to take a third point guard on their roster, hopefully, that’s me.”

The Cavs will also play eight pre-season games in October before the regular season starts in November.

“There’s a lot of hard work to be done, but everything is going okay at the moment,’’ he said.

Dellavedova was back in his hometown of Maryborough this week as he prepares to represent Australia against New Zealand in this month’s Oceania Championships.

The point guard said his time with Cleveland at the NBA Summer League was an eye-opener.

“Summer league was a really good experience,’’ he said.

“Getting used to the extra athleticism and the different style of basketball was good for me.

“It was a step up from college, but having played in the Olympics helped me prepare for that.

“It was a little bit different in that you’re competing for the team to get wins which is the main thing, but you’re also competing with your team-mates for a spot on the final roster.

“For the most part we had a good team atmosphere. The team was thrown together and we only had a few training sessions together before our first game, so overall I thought we did okay.”

Cavs coach Mike Brown didn’t coach the Cavs team at Summer League, but has been in close contact with Dellavedova.

“Mike Brown was at my pre-draft workouts with Cleveland, so I caught up with him there,’’ Dellavedvoa said.

“He took us a for a couple of training sessions before Summer League and then he stepped back and watched the games.

“I’ve had a few talks with him just to see what he was after from me and they were positive.”

Dellavedova is not putting his feet up on return to Maryborough. He’s having daily training sessions in the gym where his career started some 15 years ago.

“Mum and Dad (Leanne and Mark) have been doing some rebounding for me... it’s a good way to keep them fit,’’ Dellavedova said with a chuckle.

“It’s great to be back shooting in the Maryborough Stadium where it all began.”

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

Dellavedova is not an nba level player

Can't create any separation from summer league let alone nba guards
doesn't get to the free throw line (not even once in summer league)
doesn't score efficiently (27% fg, 20% 3pt in summer league)
is a major liability defensively
3.0 apg to 2.7 to's in summer league

He's fundamentally sound but that only works for 7 footers on the nba level

Bottom line, if he was an african-american kid from Detroit no one is talking about him

You must've missed the multi page discussions on the likes of Manny Harris and Michael Eric the past few seasons. Even if he has an outside shot of making the team, this board would be talking about him regardless of where he was born. :chuckles:

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

I was personally disappointed in Dellavedova's shooting performance in summer league. I've watched the kid play 20+ times, and while he has an occasional off night from the outside, he seemed to only find his groove scoring in one game. There is no doubt his shooting from the outside has to improve at this next level.

That said, the Cavaliers want a true point guard for the last spot on the bench. One that is inexpensive and doesn't mind going down to the D League when the rest of the point guards are healthy. I watched Jeremy Pargo last year. I saw the quick step, the ability to get to the basket... the team sucked with Jeremy Pargo running the offense because he didn't get everyone else involved. Once Shaun Livingston began to play the point, the entire bench played better. That is the hope for Dellavedova. You can point to his assist rate, but I actually watched the summer league games. Nobody was making open shots aside from Cory Higgins and Zeller. I want to see Dellavedova's assist numbers with guys who hit open shots, because Della did get them open looks.

As for the race baiting, that is just shameful discussion. He is being discussed because right now, he seems to be winning the competition for the last spot on the bench.

Re: Matthew Dellavedova (training camp invite)

I was pretty disappointed with his play in Summer League. I thought it was a bit shy of "okay" (as he described it), although there were moments where his defensive effort paid off.

On the bright side, his shaky play during Summer League, along with his much better college play, probably gave the Cavs a better shot at retaining him. If he had performed much better, we would probably be hearing about some other team or a league overseas.

He'll have a shot in training camp to determine whether he makes the team, ends up in Canton, or has to go elsewhere to develop.
