I just liked the headline.

Yes, yes. We've all had Taco Bell.

Day One of Shelter At Home: A Log

I peed on the rug today. The dogs have accepted me as one of their own.

A friend in my building invited me over. While this may not exactly qualify as social distancing, human interaction is an important thing, so I reluctantly accepted.

My friend has apparently done what I have done in stockpiling whiskey, only with cocaine.

I was offered a line of coke. He held out the rolled up dollar bill to me with a smile. "Are you insane?" I questioned. "There's a pandemic on." I pulled out my wallet, rolled up my own bill, and only then did the line. It's important that we practice safe drug use.

Five lines later, I think I might be god. I'm definitely always right, and god is nothing if not infallible.

Damn, cocaine doesn't last long. Probably not god (not ruling it out just yet). I made an old fashioned with Sazerac Rye and went to the dog park, as I assume that's probably what god would have done after a few rails and a fair amount of Islay Scotch.

Dogs are stupid.

Back home and it's almost bed time, which means it's time to smoke a little weed. It keeps the party going while also slowing it down. Perfect for a night cap, as is the 15 year old Scotch I just poured. Remember, getting drunk alone during a pandemic isn't alcoholism, it's doing your civic duty.

Just hoping the liver doesn't go while the hospitals are overrun.

I just coughed. OMG. Is it corona?

Ten minutes later...pretty sure it was just the weed pen. I feel pretty okay.

I opened Plex on my TV and threw on "What We Do in the Shadows," which I started re-watching a few nights ago. The first lines I hear:
"Yes. You told that joke about the group of sailors."
"It's like a virtual smorgasbord of seamen."

I think everything might turn out okay.

That story about Spain buying those bunk tests isn’t there anymore. Was it removed? Is it anywhere else?

Mississippi lifting their restrictions now, when there is an epicenter of problems so close in New Orleans, is an extremely bad idea.

But also very on brand.
The whole idea of only reacting when an epicenter develops is insane. The virus spreads exponentially, everywhere that doesn't take steps to contain it will become an epicenter. Once the epicenter is identified, it's too late. The problem is already 10x worse in that area because of the delays between infection -> first symptom -> hospitalization.

This whole piecemeal approach in the US is making things so much worse than they could be.

It took 8 days for the death total in the US to go from 100 to 1000 and it's continuing on a pretty straight exponential growth curve. If anything, the line is trending up when we need it to trend down. If this logarithmic line doesn't straighten out soon, in about a week the total will be 10k deaths and a little over a week after that the total will be 100k deaths.

Many of the people who will die in that timeframe already have the virus. Most don't know it yet. Shouldn't even be remotely thinking about opening things back up until after the exponential growth in deaths has ended.

I think a big part of looking at all of these is the density of the area that is infected. I think the curve you show while true is driven more by what we saw in the first big cities hit. I don’t think you see the same growth from the areas less populated. I just don’t see us growing to 100,000 deaths in 2 weeks. I think there has been enough done to avoid that. While I do agree areas not yet hit do need to be more cautious as like you said there could be the virus spreading and they do not know about. I think tHe one nice part about what OH/MI did was that we were an early adapter of this, so hopefully it will help slow down the spread. I still think we will see jump in areas based on those who went to Spring break in FL.
