Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Honestly with MMA everything is broken on twitter by Helwani and a few other guys. There are tons of sites out there for discussion. Sherdog is probably the most popular but some of the threads on there are so bad.

Agree, but it gets hilarious when they start photo-shoping fighters or people who post pics with fighters :chuckles:

Those gifs are hysterical. The Wally one has me rollin:chuckles: And, can I just say, Gina Carano is so fucking hot. She was the face for women for a minute there, but she'd get absolutely demolished in today's game. Too many bad bitches for her anymore. Stay pretty, Gina, and keep making movies.

Here ya go, Lionheart

I'm pulling for Hunt, but I just can't see it. Wish him luck, though. It will be his last shot.

Did you see the media day for GSP vs Diaz? :headbang: I cannot wait for this fight. A bunch of us our getting together to watch it at a bar that always gets big numbers on fight nights. It's gonna be insane. These 2 guys hate each other. I still think Diaz's only hope is to get GSP out of his game. So far, so good, though. Diaz really seems to be in his head more than usual. GSP is usually so focused, but you can tell Diaz is firmly planted under his skin.

For those who are more knowledgable about the sport than me, are there rules about what styles you can use in the ring? I know Muay Thai, BJJ, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling etc. are all pretty prevalent. Can a Krav Maga expert walk in and compete? I just think it would be hilarious if like a Shoalin Monk stepped into the octagon.

GSP Diaz I don't remember the last time I was this pumped for a fight. I just hope it lives up to the hype.

IIRC back in the day it was just really all about discipline VS discipline. Krav Maga VS Chute Boxer, Karateka VS Judo Practitioner, BJJ VS Boxing. I've seen a couple videos where someone dressed as a monk fought but I can't verify its legitimacy, haha. Last time I saw a pure artist - James Toney - fight, he was submitted rather easily by Randy Couture (I know James is not a srping chicken but still).

Nowadays, its really all about mixing it up. Though a lot of the more popular fighters do come from certain specialties say, GSP started off practicing Kyokushin Karate; Lyoto Machida is a karateka as well; Chael Sonnen is a decorated wrestler; and Mark Hunt is a champion kickboxer. Because of the sport growing bigger and bigger, more and more young guys train MMA directly, meaning they don't focus or start off with a certain discipline.

OT: A few months ago the apartment right downstairs from my own was converted into an MMA gym. I only looked briefly but I'd like to start training there as well. I'm heavyset but I picked up running last year so I'm definitely looking into adding to my own regimen to get into better shape. Hitting a heavy bag IMO is the best way to fight stress after a long day of work. :chuckles:

My buddy from school fights in Bellatore. Never much of a big MMA guy. I don't have a stomach for the brutality. Or so I thought. I've been watching more recently hoping to see my friend some day.. I guess he was a dark match on a Bellatore card maybe two months ago, he was supposed to be on spike but got pushed off air for another fight. The more I watch the more I'm getting into it. It's not as brutal as I envisioned it. I'm a fan of the ground stuff. Less barbaric more technique and skill IMO. Either way if I see Bellatore on tv nowadays I tune in hoping to see my bud.

The rules really don't limit any kind of style. But, like Lionheart said, today's MMA has evolved from guys who were more specialized to guys who take a specialty, use it as their base game, and then develop into more rounded fighters through training. Different camps often times are know for different specialties. The obvious one is the Gracie's, who are renouned for their jiu jitsu.

Guys with limited reoertoire's are having a tougher and tougher time nowadays of achieiving and sustaining success. The obvious example is Brock Lesnar, who is an absolute physical monster, but his limited skillset was apparent when facing guys with a full arsenal.

As of now, the only real limitations are more in the rules. In the old days, in leagues like Pride, it was a near free for all. The rules? :chuckles: Today, though, in an attempt to make the sport not seem as barbaric, so it appeals to a larger audience, there are a decent amount of rules. You can't eye gouge. You can't knee or kick a guy on his head when he is on his knees. You can't boot stomp someone. No ball shots. No kidney shots. No piledrivers. No throat striking. So on and so forth. Most of it is common sense stuff for a sport looking to become more mainstream(read civilized).

ive always wanted to learn mma. Im a pretty good fighter but would love to just be an absolute lethal fucking weapon.... Plus, there are few things more fun than hitting someone

Anyone part of an MMA gym? How do they work? Am I just taught how to like.. wrestle? What if I want to spar?

I'm not anymore but I used to train Muay Thai at an mma gym. Guy who owned it came in second during one of the seasons of the Ultimate Fighter. They'll start you off slow and teach you the basics. Once you get a bit more comfortable you will absolutely spar. My experience was just Muay Thai though so there wasn't really any ground game.

The training was actually a lot like what you see in boxing gyms. Jump roping, heavy bag work, speed bag, push ups, jogging. Muay Thai is a lot like boxing except it also has powerful kicks and you're always trying to get into the Thai clinch. Knees and elbows are your best friends. Guy who trained me was a local light weight champion. He used to yell, "just the tip!" to reinforce that you always want to throw elbows and knees.

Let me tell you, after you train for a while you gain a whole different kind of respect for these guys. You watch on TV and think, "oh, he kicked him in the leg, that's nice." Well when you actually get hit with one of those leg kicks it feels like somebody is nailing you with a baseball bat.

Right now I'm training in Escrima which is much more applicable to a street fight than the octagon. Similar to Krav Maga in that it's brutal and all about taking down attackers quickly. Last class I went to we focused on knife disarms that either involved breaking the attacker's thumb or putting the knife back in him.

It's a GSP fight, so probably ninety percent of it will be GSP lying on top of Diaz while the audience naps. ;)
