Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Yordan Álvarez's Historic June

For what seems like eternity, 2022 American League MVP talks have been dominated by one name and one name only: Aaron Judge. Throughout the month of June, however, Yordan Álvarez has made all of us press pause on declaring the MVP a done deal, at least for the time being.

If you've only had your eyes on Judge and Mike Trout in the AL this season, now is the time to shift your focus down south to Houston. Álvarez currently leads the league in OPS and OPS+, and his past month was a big reason why.

Just how absurd was Álvarez's June compared to past performances? Let's use Stathead to find the answer.

Álvarez Got Hot Quick

First, let's head to Baseball Reference to check out Álvarez's splits section.

What's a split? A split is a term used to describe different situations players may face. For example, a hitter may have different stats versus left-handed pitching and right-handed pitching. If you're looking at a hitter's stats versus left-handed pitching, those are his splits. In the case of Álvarez, we're looking at his monthly splits, that is, how his stats have differed from month to month this season.

Álvarez posted a 1.346 OPS in June of 2022, but what stands out is his jump from May to June. Between those two months, Álvarez had a 0.453 difference in OPS, indicating a significant improvement.

The Split Finder

To look at leaders within a given split, you'll want to use the Split Finder on Stathead Baseball. This tool allows you to search every split that we cover on Baseball Reference, and it's set up just like the Season Finder, giving you the option to look for single season leaders, or leaders over combined seasons or careers.

In this case, we're going to pick "Months" as our split and select June from the dropdown list of months.

We'll also set a minimum of 80 Plate Appearances, to make sure we have a good sample size. Here's the results:

Based on our search, we can see that Yordan Álvarez just finished the month with the 24th best June OPS out of players from the NL/AL since 1901. It's the highest OPS recorded in the month of June since Jason Giambi had a 1.373 OPS in June of 2003. On top of that, it's the fifth best June OPS of the 21st century! Álvarez has been mashing, there's no doubt about it, but how does his June OPS compare to all other top monthly performances?

Go Deeper with the Match Any Split Search

To see who had the best OPS in any single month all time, we'll just need to make a small tweak from the previous query. Before, under "Months", we selected June. Now, we'll go to the same drop-down menu but select the first option at the very top: "Match Any Listed".

Now, we'll just rerun the search and find Álvarez's name somewhere on the list.

And there he is. Thanks to Stathead, we now know that Yordan Álvarez just had the 112th best single month of baseball by OPS. Sure, that may not seem that impressive, but when you consider the over 100 years of data that Stathead contains, you begin to realize that we just witnessed a historic month from Álvarez - one that may not be replicated for at least a few seasons.

The Royals got three minor league players for their competitive balance pick #35... OF Waters (who @EdMonix11 was adamantly against getting) RHP Andrew Hoffman and INF CJ Alexander.

Waters is looking more like the 4th OF type. Hoffman to me is more of Plutko/spot starter type (good control, not amazing stuff). Alexander has added some power to his swing, but to me doesn't look like a big leaguer. That being stated they needed some more pieces...

Atlanta must be really high on this year's draft to trade their top prospect on a comp pick, which teams are allowed to trade now.

The competitive balance picks have always been available for trade.. Thise are the only ones.

CLE dealt one away as part of the 3 way deal to send out Edwin & bring back Carlos Santana.

MKE has dealt theirs away multiple times..
