MLB Trade Deadline thread!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Coach, the Browns have been a joke for decades and still are really.

While I don't have data to support the idea, businesses leaving seems logical.

Baseball in general taking a hit seems a bit off to me. Too many full stadiums outside of Cleveland to believe that.

Exiting the 90's era and not having those exciting teams year in and year out seems very logical to me as well, but again I don't have that data to back it.

Dolan's reputation could be a source of distaste for many fans. I find it ridiculous, but it's likely partly to blame.

Bottom line, until I see actual numbers/polls that show the decline in attendance at Progressive field is due to other professional sports I just don't buy that they are factors. I can't even begin to count how many Browns fans I know, but none of them miss a Guardians' game because they're Browns fans. They simply haven't seen the entertainment value in the Indians/Guardians over the last 15+ yrs. I have never heard one of them weighing one against the other. I think part of that is due to being spoiled by the 90's teams' offenses. They were exciting and talented. They bludgeoned teams with their offense and athleticism. If my suspicions are correct, I think they are going to find it difficult to regain that level of fan dedication until they have one of the league's more powerful offenses. They'll need to win consistently as well. I'm not suggesting we'll ever see 455 again, but a significant and more consistent increase in attendance might be the result of doing so.

Whatever the reasons, I hope they fade/improve and this organization gets what it deserves which is large crowds at every home game.

How are you feeling by the way?

I can use silverware easier than I could before my surgery and my hand is stitched up. I still may have to go back for a second surgery if my finger doesn't work right in a few weeks. They had to clean out all the scar tissue first. If my tendon doesn't heal with therapy, I may have to get surgery on it. Normally they let it go, but because of my hypermobility, they can't, so it would mean they would have to cut open a different spot to fix that... lol

Baseball ratings and attendance has been down for some time now and the younger generations aren't as interested in it as the older one as well. That being said, big markets will still stay hot, smaller markets, especially ones hit by jobs leaving won't be the same.

To be sincere, the crowds at baseball games aren't the same, there is a lot of people who go to a game to more chill and not there because they really like baseball. I sometimes have had better conversations with people from out of town/fans of the other teams, since they actually came to watch baseball. Ten years ago, the crowds were definitely more there to watch baseball...

Looking at the remainder of the season after the deadline inactivity you have to question if the plan has hit a speed bump?

Outside of injury how are any of Pilkington, Battenfield, Curry, Morris, Gaddis or Allen going to get looks? If none of them can be promoted that means none of Espino, Williams, Bibee or Burns can either right?

There was no market for Amed or Franmil. Reyes was obviously released, but Amed is still playing SS which means Gimenez will not be which means Freeman and/or Miller will not be playing 2B. DH has been freed up and gives Tito a bit more flexibility for sure.

Kwan looks entrenched in LF and to my dismay Straw in CF. That leaves RF to some mix of Jones and OGon. I suspect that Miller will be seeing fewer AB to allow one of them to get time at DH while the other plays the field. I don't think this team will ever be dangerous if 2/3 of the OF are slap hitters. I'll be rooting for them though. Outside of an injury I don't see how they'll get Brennan an opportunity and good Lord does he deserve one. What gives when they deem Valera ready?

I am happy that they didn't trade for Murphy. I would have much preferred to deal with the Blue Jays for Jansen or just left things as they are and promote Naylor soon. I think we should take as many lumps as we can this season so that we are more competitive next year and thereafter.

Can't help but wonder if there will be a large number of designations that might provide something Cleveland wants to try. Namely a 1B.

Jason Stark does anonymous quiz of MLB execs finding that many are salty that Preller not only gets his cake but gets to eat it, too. Preller works his ass off, and has a grasp of both the analytical side and the scout side. The Padres identify talent like no other, and he has the balls fortitude to bundle his quarters for dollars instead of letting them run out of options or stagnate in the farm system.

The third team in the race for this division did even less than Chicago as they didn’t add a single player to their MLB roster. The Guardians have an abundance of farm depth, especially in the middle infield and pitching departments. They seemed like a prime candidate to trade for one of the big catchers on the market but failed to get any deals done.
While Cleveland might have quite the same chance as Minnesota or Chicago to win the division, why not at least try? They’ve had some excellent breakout players in addition to continued stable play from many of their veterans. They had the ability to overtake their division rivals by utilizing their loaded farm system but failed to do so. The deadline can only be looked at as a failure for a team that could’ve competed.

We decided that "buying" was not a winning strategy.
If you do not play, you cannot win.
But it also means you cannot lose?

That's not an F, it's a C.

An F would have been deserved for trading Valera for Naquin or something like that. Not even close.
An F would have been trading a Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson.

Funny how they don't address what has this team in the division and WC races.

They never seemed "primed" to make any trades. WTF do they need a C for with Naylor and Lavastida so close? These are not 2 lower end C prospects that are years away. Sure as hell doesn't make sense to give up the most valuable prospects in the organization for what might not be a long term upgrade. If/when the time comes that they decide that Naylor or Lavastida don't have what it takes that's when they'll make a move for a C.

Cleveland has pitching and an improving offense with more coming. I'll give them a solid A just for not doing something stupid or overpaying for a soon to be FA that they have little to no chance of resigning.

We still have the ability to "overtake our division rivals". This article is the only thing that gets an F.

I cannot give them an A since I felt like they needed to add another veteran right handed bat, but I am not going to give them a bad grade either since, they didn't make any moves that would hurt them long term. They stuck to the All-star with control or play the young guys motto and for better or for worse they stuck with it... They had their targets and it didn't work so they didn't get desperate to get a deal done that would hurt them in end.
