MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL vs Ravens

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Woods gets a pass for the season as a whole because the players suck, but he also had no plan for Lamar Jackson running the football Monday night. It's like he had no idea such a thing was possible. Straight 4 man rush, blitzing up the middle, no help up the middle to keep him in the pocket. It was the worst possible game plan he could have come up with. Idiot.

So he’s guessing wrong with bad players?

I think at this point you have to expand on this "guessing wrong" thesis, because the NFL defense is more complex than picking the opponent's play in Tecmo Bowl.

It would also be important to accurately explain how you can differentiate choices players make from the defensive system.

Or we go ahead and write this off as the usual Cleveland "I'm mad, I want a coach fired" thing.

I’m definitely mad. And I’m definitely not impressed by Woods, so far. Some of it is stupid players, but some of it is scheme. If things don’t get better, I think he’s definitely one of the places we can upgrade in the off-season.

So you have no plan on addressing what you believe Woods can do better?

I can tell you what players can do better - not be named MJ Stewart, Karl Joseph, and Mack Wilson.

Stewart is a bust from the Bucs who has been forced into action due to injury. As a slot corner, he had multiple pass interference calls and blown coverages in the first half and had to be pulled for Tavierre Thomas at one point.

Karl Joseph was replaced as strong safety by Harrison because he is a liability in both coverage and tackling angles. He missed two tackles on Monday.

Mack Wilson was the lowest graded player in the game by PFF. He only played 17 snaps because he appeared adverse to contact. I'm glad I didn't throw my phone through my LG screen when I saw him walk next to JK Dobbins as he pushed other defenders forward for ten yards in the first quarter.

That's a mere three players who shouldn't be on the field for the Browns in 2021. I didn't even get to Sendejo - an undrafted career backup strong safety who has to play free safety. I didn't even get to two missed tackles by BJ Goodson, in his worst game in over a month. And I barely have time to mention Porter Gustin sprinting upfield play after play and blowing contain on the edge against Lamar Jackson because he evidently thought he is playing Ben Rothlisberger.

i didn't even get to the fact Jackson's passing was essentially shut down all night long until his last drive of the game.

That's all very well said, and very true.

I'm just going to point out that we knew he was named "Mack Wilson" before the season started. Injuries that force you to play scrubs that you never planned on starting games, that's excusable. But this linebacker issue was known before the season even began.

Serious question. When was the last time we had a DC we liked??

It is very likely that absolutely nobody who was on the field in the Browns back seven plays meaningful snaps with the Browns next season at this time.

At cornerback and safety: not a single player who played yesterday has a contract with the Browns in 2021. I like Money Mitch because he embraces his role as a dirty work backup corner... but his modest 3.6 million contract for this season will run out at the end of the season. Everyone else was a cheap one year deal.

At linebacker, nobody makes a starter salary. They paid Goodson 2.4 million with hardly any guaranteed money this season, and he doubles the next highest linebacker salary.

Arguments can be made that they could have spent more, but the team invested in the secondary, and so many fans miss that fact... because those investments weren't on the field Monday.

I get the investment in the secondary. It's just that letting the linebacker corps be a bunch of turds is going to hurt the worst against QB's like we faced on Monday.

What the Browns tried to do is what many teams have done at lower valued positions many times before. They went for quantity over quality. They expected one or two of Wilson, Takitaki, and Phillips to improve by now. That's what Kirksey and Schobert did as players drafted at similar spots.

It just didn't happen.
