Moves the Indians should make for the 2nd half

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
with the trading deadline now in the rearview mirror.. rosterbation moves will begin to trickle in... this is a time when a hidden gem or a better than what the Indians currently have on their roster may become available.. IF the CLEFO is willing to go against the conventional wisdom of years gone by:

e.g.: many / most first time DFA'ers go unclaimed and are then sent off their parent clubs' 40 man roster and sent to a AAA/minor league asignment.. This understanding or gentlemen's agreement (w/ apology to Kim Ng) permits the parent club to keep their guy without issue.. The behavior is often reciprocated by many teams.. The player returned to the minors then cannot be returned to the parent club without exposure to waivers or becomes a MiLB free agent shortly thereafter..

With the current situation the Tribe is in.. having a guy or two exposed to waivers claimed.. especially a guy holding a 40 man roster spot.. is encouraged..

That said.. there is a specific player that was just DFA'd that the Indians might consider.. immediately.. Domingo Acevedo.. a former NYY drafteee/signeee with a blazing FB and less than average (even for an MiLB'er) secondary offerings.. He'd slot right into the middle of the pen going into 2022 IF the CLEFO player development group can fix him.. IDK if they can... but the raw material to work with is well worth the nothing cost..

Thoughts?...
Nothing wrong with churning the bottom of the roster this season.

He's definitely interesting. I'd also be interested in OF Marcus Wilson the former second round pick that the Red Sox just dfa'd. He's younger than Mercado and Daniel Johnson and was having a better season in AAA than both of them.

So the Twins did not trade Buxton at the deadline (as promised) because he rejected their contract extension offer. I don’t think he will open 2022 at Target Field (certainly not in a Twins uniform. He could a great target for the Tribe that Straw should not block regardless of defense. Would trading several premium prospects be enough and would this be a wise move for the Guardians?

Certainly Straw would represent no impediment to acquiring a player like Buxton…he is a guy of great talent, but I would not want to invest the capital of players and extension cash on him. He has just not stayed on the field long enough to make me feel good about going all in on him…bad luck perhaps, but it has been too frequent in a young career.

No thanks...
After a peak at the numbers I would rather give one of the youngsters a chance..

he was a top 100 prospect at one point... I expect someone like a Baltimore will end up with him via waivers in a sense...

To me the only logical conclusion is Amed is not in the future plans. He's not a starting caliber SS defensively.

SS is Gimenez' job in 2022, at least to start.

CF is officially taken by straw.

2B is Owen Miller's for as long as he can hold it, right? If he falls on his face over the last 60 then I guess you could make the case that Amed could slide here but, then he's learning yet another position? And we're looking at a league average defensive 2B in a best case scenario from him?

I just don't see it. He finishes out this season, hopefully continues to show that he's capable on offense. And The Guard sell him to a team that still sees upside.

I would not agree with that conclusion..

Straw getting the rest of 2021 to audition in CF - Yes. Makes sense.
But just handing it to him for 2022 can backfire just like it did when CLE looked to give Mercado CF in 2020 (after 2019).

Tell Amed Rosario to work on being in the OF all off-season. Have him ready to compete for CF.

Perhaps Amed out plays Myles Straw in spring training. Maybe not.

Having those 2 allows CLE to non-tender Zimmer & one of Daniel Johnson/ Oscar Mercado to create the needed 40 man roster space in November.

Yeah I think we have to take a step back there.

For SS we have Gimenez, but we also have Amed still as an emergency option as well as Arias and Freeman potentially rising up sooner or later.

For 2B I don't see why Owen Miller is given the job - he might have more promise than Clement and Chang but we also have other options like Amed and maybe later in the year, Freeman.

To me getting Straw adds to our versatility by making Amed available for the infield. Now there's nothing to say that we can't have Amed in LF and Straw in CF for instance, but Owen Miller has a lot to show before he is given any kind of job.

Amed strikes me as having a very long and low learning curve.
This has me wondering: when I think of learning curves I would think long would mean length of time or speed of progress, and low would mean there really isn't that much to learn (as opposed to a high learning curve). There's no chance that's what you actually meant, right?

we've got plenty of guys who are versatile - we need a couple guys who can hit major league pitching

Not being technical at all, I'm just sayin' he don't seem ta catch on too fast.
