Mudcat Grant passes away

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Sad news. Was a good guy from what i remember. That 65 Twins team was loaded offensively.

Mudcat came to my elementary school in the sixties. He was an entertaining storyteller, a humorous guy with a big personality and a pretty nice career to boot.

Muscat was a good pitcher for a fairly long time, and a fan favorite.

He might not have been the greatest announcer, but he was funny as heck with his slow drawl.

He invented the term, 'a little chin music', for pitches high and tight, and it came out slowly.

While working with Harry Jones, his commentary often began with the drawl, 'Well, Hahrry'....

The Indians were pretty bad back then, and Mudcats commentary was often the best part of the games.

One of the great nicknames of all time. He's listed in Baseball Reference as Mudcat Grant, not James Grant or Jim Grant.

In 1965 he went 21-7 for the Twins, then beat the Dodgers in Game 1 of the World Series, going nine innings in an 8-2 win. Four days later he went five innings in a 7-2 loss, allowing four runs. Three days later he pitched nine more innings in a 5-1 win. Two complete game wins and he also went 2-for-8 at the plate with a double, a home run, and three RBI's. Three high pressure World Series starts in eight days and he went the distance in two of them.

Unfortunately for the Twins Sandy Koufax started Game 7 and shut them out pitching on two days rest. Otherwise Grant might have been the MVP.

Mudcat was one of the guys that makes baseball great.
Talented player, colorful guy, great story-teller.
Even though he won 20, and was World Series Champion with the Twins, he we always be an Indian in my book.
Somebody should write a book.

A true contributor to the game.
