Chris Paul came out of college with phenomenal lateral quickness and footwork. He was already adept at defending the pick-and-roll and efficient at stealing the ball (though, Sexton did rack up more steals). They were just different defensive prospects.Why, if Chris Paul can be a good defender, can't Sexton. It's not like we are talking about IT the midget.
Think about it like this, it took elite levels of footwork and lateral quickness as well as being one of the best defensive guard prospects of all time. CP3 entered the league as a +3.5 defensive win shares player. That number is insane for any rookie, let alone one who is six feet.
My point is, Chris Paul did not have to improve as a defender, he was already elite. Sexton entered the league as arguably the worst defensive guard. It is effectively implausible that he improves to CP3 levels. He does not have the lateral quickness nor the size to make up for it.
