2019 NBA Draft Lottery

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
ESPN mock has us picking Darius garland with the 5th pick. He and Sexton are both around 6'1" and would be a small backcourt compared to others, but could it work? Could Colin Sexton and Darius Garland work in the same way that Kyle Lowry and Fred Van Vleet work?

That would be a defensive disaster.

Obviously the Cavs would give a Garland/Sexton backcourt a chance to work. Why not? They only won 19 games this past year and aren’t going to be good again this year so it’s the perfect opportunity to experiment and see how that pairing performs.

The odds do seem likely that pairing would have some major struggles defensively. With that in mind, the next step would be playing one of Garland or Sexton as the starting PG and bringing the other off the bench as as the 6th man/3rd guard.

If they went that route then they would be able to at least limit the amount of time those two shared the court. If Sexton became the 6th man, he could be on the floor every minute Garland is not and in theory they’d only have to share the floor about 15 MPG instead of 30-35 MPG.

If both of those options fail, then the last step after that would be trading one of them for a better fitting piece.

It all really depends on your evaluation of Garland compared to the wing players.

If you think Garland is the next Lillard, Culver is the next LeVert and Hunter is the next Anunoby then obviously you take Garland even if Colin Sexton is already on your roster because you’d be drafting a guy you think has all-NBA potential.

No I do not like a backcourt like that for the Cavs. Not starting at least...One would need to come off the bench, only if Garland has better upside than Sexton..They don't have a support cast like Toronto has for that group, with shot blockers, athletic wings and rebounders.
Cavs need a big defensive guard/wing player.

Well no, we don't yet, but we are still at the beginning of our rebuild. We need to be picking BPPA (best player potential available) and I could see Garland being that at 5.

Watching videos of all these prospects, Garland does stand out with his great handles and quick shooting release. I wish Sexton was a few inches taller so he would fit better at the 2. Garland is a much better overall PG prospect. Sexton is not an ideal PG.

This is the kind of mindset that can easily get a team get in trouble.

The Cavs won 19 games a year ago. They MAYBE have one starting caliber player on a good team right now in Sexton and that’s not even guaranteed yet. They need high end talent above all else. Doesn’t matter what position it is.

Draft BPA and only worry about fit once you’ve found two or three legitimate building blocks.

Unless the Cavs are completely sold on Culver/Hunter i'd love to get my hands on the Hawks 2 picks somehow. Also trade Jr along with 26 to move up into the teens. That would give us 3 top 15-18 picks.

At 8 and 10 draft Sekou and one of Langford/White. With the 3rd first round pick we're in the range of Bol/Little/Porter Jr

#8 Sekou
#10 Langford
#15 Little

I'd rather just take our guy at 5, 26 and trade JR for a future 1st. Not very high on the overall strength of this draft.

Absolutely. They need to draft the absolute best player they can regardless of position. You make it work thereafter.

The Cavs willingness to move down will all be dependent on whether they can get Hunter at a later spot. I honestly believe he’s the guy they want.

The Cavs aren’t getting the 8th & 10th picks from Atlanta unless they include the 26th pick. If we feel that’s too steep we could always demand one of the Hawks’ three 2nd round picks. In the end, I think the Lakers end up bringing the Hawks into a trade with the Pelicans for AD. The Hawks have a ton of draft assets, which has to appeal to David Griffin & the Pelicans, who would likely prefer 8 & 10 over just 4. Griff might even ask for a 2020 pick instead of the #10 pick this year.

You aren't telling me anything I haven't said myself in this forum.
But Cleveland has a history of taking small guards(I feel Gilbert drives this ) and then has to deal them later.
I never said take a wing and pass up a potential star caliber PG..nope..I'm stating what they do need at either SG/SF spot..and it's really the same thing I said last year.
This draft i would agree to take the BPA regardless of position because I am not sold on Sexton..and that goes for Cedi also although he's a SF.
My desires are fueled by what I see from other playoff teams and the talent they have on the wings, something the Cavs haven't had outside of Lebron.

I'm not convinced they're decided fully yet on their preference for Reddish, Hunter or Culver. I'm hoping we just draft and keep Culver if he's available. Or if Atlanta is hot for him I'm making them overpay to get him. Still lean towards keeping him.

Garland and Sexton would not be a successful starting duo. They would be abused defensively. Sexton would pair well with someone who has the length to guard 2s but the offensive mentality to initiative offense and be a distributor as much as scorer. I think Barrett would fit really well next to Sexton.

If you start Garland and Sexton together, it's nothing like Lowry and VanVleet. Those guys are wide-bodied bulldogs defensively.

I agree we should be taking BPA and figure it out later. I also think if we pick Garland that it would be kind of unexpected and Phoenix or Chicago might call for a trade after. Maybe then we get our wing and pick up an asset along the way.

The flip side of this though is the NBA is pretty flush with PGs. I've heard multiple reporters think there are more starting caliber PGs in the NBA than there are spots for them.
