New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Was Dark filmed in german and they just dubbed it for American television? The audio isn’t synchronized with the actors’ mouth movement and it’s insanely distracting.

Yes. You can change the audio to the German original in the settings, and you should because only savages watch shows with dubs.

yeah, I stopped the show 15 minutes into ep 1 and posted that; I didn’t know the aforementioned was an option. So fucking glad I asked, because there was no fucking way I was watching a dub and doing the production the disservice

To be honest, I think it's a show that benefits from being able to read the subtitles, because it's very dense with a ton of characters and there's so much shit going on. Reading helps with the retention. Although even then I had to re-watch season one when two came out because I forgot a lot of what happened outside of the major stuff.

The Sinner is so damn good.

I actually think it's one show that has so little dialogue that the dubbing is fine. They really don't have long conversations between characters until season 2. Season 1 is so much exploring the world visually.

I actually wish Netflix had more dubbed options. I gave up narcos because it felt exhausting to me reading all the subtitles.

This is a good article on what Netflix mindset might be now on making shows. The writer brings up the point of the types of contracts they give out and how after season 2 a show starts to cost more because of contract negotiations. Also they say that Netflix might not be looking at how well rated a show is or how many subscribers watch the show but it's more about how many new subscribers a show will bring in.

I think Netflix is playing with fire if this is true. I think subscribers have gotten use to their model and if their favorite shows are getting canceled then they might see long term subscribers start to cancel. Netflix has been less and less appealing to me as of late. The new shows just aren't the quality of before and there will be more and more content from other streaming services. Netflix could turn into something that I've subscribed to every month to something I decide to pick up for a couple random months out of the year on a rotation with other streaming services.

If I wasn’t getting Netflix through T-Mobile, I probably would have cancelled by now.

Also, Disney is bundling Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu with ads for $12.99. Looks like they’re getting my money.

I was surprised by that price but it really makes it a true competitor to Netflix. It's basically like getting one of the services for free.

Hulu has really figured out how to make money from ads, I think I've seen they make $15 a month from each subscriber just from ads. My guess Disney will translate that stuff to Disney+ and ESPN+.

Really Netflix should put in limited ads like before and after episodes. Maybe put in some banner ads while browsing. Also figure out product placement better. They should be looking to stop their price hike to keep subscriber or even lower the price like Hulu did.

They should probably stop cancelling shows as well.

Completely agree with that. I think Netflix will run into a problem with talent and creators deciding to go with other studios because they are seen as more committed to the show than Netflix would be. So instead of getting their pick of the top tier they will either be bidding more for the same content or having to settle for lesser content.

Like with the OA, most premium studio/networks wouldn't have cancelled it because of the relationship with Brit Marling. Somewhere like HBO, AMC, USA, etc would have kept it going some way to keep Brit Marling in house. The OA might not ever be the mega hit but Brit Marling's next project or the one after that could definitely be. Other studios/networks want to be at the front of the line for that content or be in position where they are the only place that the creator takes that project to.

Only if they let you pay more to opt out of the ads

Season 3 of Handmaid's Tale was kind of the best pivot for a show that was so highly received in its first two season. I think like The Leftovers, the writers knew they could only be this dark and hard to watch show for so long. At the end of season 2 of the Handmaid's Tales, I questioned where they were headed but wasn't too excited to see what they came up with. Now at the end of season 3, there is a clear direction and they have made the turn to a clear ending. I wouldn't be surprised if they only make 5 season in total.

To me season 3 of Handmaid's Tale is the best show we currently have had this year. I loved Euphoria but thought the season finale was a mess. Glow's 3rd season was nothing special.
