New TV Series to watch

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I am and I'm not. It's been made pretty clear that the Federation we all loved doesn't exist anymore. Not sure I want to see the social commentary of today turned into a future dystopian Trek universe.

Without getting into real world politics, I think there is a case to made about a Federation gone a little loopy after all of the trauma of the past 20 years starting with the first Borg incursion.

Prior to the return of the Romulans in the first season of TNG the Federation had known peace and expansion with some minor wars with the Talarians, who are a push over, and with the Cardassians who were decidedly unpleasant, but more on the level of the Iraq War; a moderate burden carried by a few.

And then out of the blue the Borg show up and devastates Starfleet. Followed by an increasingly unstable intergalactic scene. The low-intensity war in the Cardassian DMZ, the discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole and the Dominion.

Followed by a cold war and hot war with the Klingons. And then the big one happens with the devastating Dominion War that saw ruin to half the Federation.

As happened to the US following WWII, I can see the Federation lapsing into some level of paranoia after being attacked four times in six years.

All though with the Romulans broken as a Great Power, one would think the Federation would have mellowed.

I’m now on season 7 of Veep. This show is so god damn funny. The insults are hilarious. And I can’t look at politics the same after watching.

It is a very accurate show.

Right -- because there just isn't enough political hectoring already infesting everything else in our lives, so now we need Patrick Stewart jamming his worldview down our throats. I'd sooner spend a month on the Eastern Shore hearing "Golly Day!" every 10 minutes than tune in to this:

However, for “Picard,” Steward wanted a show that reflected today’s world by centering the drama around how the Federation – the union of planets – takes “an isolationist turn.”

[The show] was me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump and feeling, ‘Why hasn’t the Federation changed? Why hasn’t Starfleet changed?’ Maybe they’re not as reliable and trustworthy as we all thought,” Stewart said.

Well, they had already changed in the TNG era.

DS9 clearly demonstrates that the Federation weren't the goodie goodies they liked to think themselves as.

They had already taken a turn when they green-lighted an assassination plot against Gowron, an intelligence operation to trick the Romulans into joining the war, that included murdering a senator, poisoning an entire planet to end the Maquis threat once and for all, imposing martial law in the face of the Dominion threat and when they (twice) attempted Xenocide against the Dominion.

All that was done in the 90s. Before even 9/11.

Captain Sisko says it succinctly about the Federation going down a dark road: "It is easy to be a saint in paradise. But real people live in the real world."

While clearly Stewart is influencing things, Federation gone wrong is a trope they've already explored.

Just started Mindhunter, this show is incredible

It is very good!

I'm sad to see that is looks like Season 2 is the last.

HBO's new comedy Avenue 5 is off to a good start. First episode had some great laughs.

"Are you Australian?"
"Am I Australian? No, I'm not Australian. I'll tell you what I am. I'm English."
"Oh my god. That's so much worse."

Literally watched this because of your post and it really did have some great moments

“Ok captain NOT America”

I’m not a captain

“Are you an admiral?”

The "are you an admiral" line killed me too.

I've heard the first episode is the worst of the first season, which bodes well for the series going forward since I found the pilot to be very enjoyable. Most comedies tend to take a few episodes to find their footing as the writers and actors grow more comfortable with the characters, so that's no surprise.

Yeah that sounds like it could be true; there was a couple flat few minutes here and there but it didn’t deter from staying on since it picked back up. Even when Gabe from the office was talking to the passengers about being nihilist I was cracking up. It was pretty consistent imo. Glad you said something.

And fuck, I might sound extreme here but Outsider is like True detective meets some light and not over-the-top sci-fi. I’m all in

It definitely feels a lot like True Detective. Don't think you're off base at all there.

I'm pretty hopeful it's just delayed for after Mank is done. But that means an extra year of delay at the least before shooting, so still sucks.

Truth Be Told wasn’t impressive at all to me. I was super excited about it because of Aaron Paul; but that lady from Ma isn’t a good lead at all and the script wasn’t overly captivating.

Just didn’t do it for me but maybe that’s premature.

What is the deal with the guy they show at the beginning of every episode?

I'm a few episodes into Season 2 now.

That is the BTK killer.
