I am and I'm not. It's been made pretty clear that the Federation we all loved doesn't exist anymore. Not sure I want to see the social commentary of today turned into a future dystopian Trek universe.
Without getting into real world politics, I think there is a case to made about a Federation gone a little loopy after all of the trauma of the past 20 years starting with the first Borg incursion.
Prior to the return of the Romulans in the first season of TNG the Federation had known peace and expansion with some minor wars with the Talarians, who are a push over, and with the Cardassians who were decidedly unpleasant, but more on the level of the Iraq War; a moderate burden carried by a few.
And then out of the blue the Borg show up and devastates Starfleet. Followed by an increasingly unstable intergalactic scene. The low-intensity war in the Cardassian DMZ, the discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole and the Dominion.
Followed by a cold war and hot war with the Klingons. And then the big one happens with the devastating Dominion War that saw ruin to half the Federation.
As happened to the US following WWII, I can see the Federation lapsing into some level of paranoia after being attacked four times in six years.
All though with the Romulans broken as a Great Power, one would think the Federation would have mellowed.
