NFL Week 2 (9/14/14): Saints (0-1) @ Browns (0-1) [1:00 PM EST, FOX]

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm actually really pumped that Hoyer has looked solid. Solid enough to win us games, at least. It means that Manziel will actually get the time he desperately needs to develop. He's not ready yet, and our team has a history of throwing rookie QBs to the wolves only for them to flame out. Hopefully Hoyer keeps it up and Manziel gets a full season (at least) on the sidelines to learn.

Browns haven't played a legitimate defense yet. But the quality of the defense never stopped their shitty receiving corps from dropping passed and their shitty QBs from making horrible plays. Neither of those things are happening much.

The team has shown good hands overall and it's encouraging that Miles Austin appears to have some potential as a possession receiver in the Joe Jurevicius mold. Gary "Farmhand" Barnidge may have some potential for the same. Baby Hawk is just a flat out solid slot guy and I feel really good about him being able to do what Davone Bess was supposed to do.

That said, the Browns probably do have the worst receiving corps in the league right now. As happy as we've been with those guys, they don't compare to what even crappy teams like the Redskins and Cardinals have. The Browns need to draft at least two WR's, if Hoyer does turn out to be the guy.

Putting up close to 30 with receivers like this bodes well for what they could do with both Cameron and Gordon though.

We should be thanking Mike Lombardi today... Brought us Hoyer and his presence helped weed out pretentious coaching candidates to ultimately stumble upon the guy who just coaches, regardless of what their friends say about who's running things.

The Browns simply do not have reliable options 10-15 yards down the field. The guys we have are guys who are good catching short routes or behind the line quick hits.

I was shocked we moved the ball so well in the 2 minute drill because the d can pack it in vs us. We've yet to prove we can do anything over the top.

Gordon would be huge but even with him, we still need another wr that can do more than catch 5 yd drag routes.

We needed Nate Burleson to actually pan out... But I agree. Miles Austin is a band-aid and while Hawkins is certainly what Bess was supposed to be, he is best suited not being the #1 option.. It'll allow for him to make bigger gains.

Once Gordon comes back, you still need another guy there. You don't need a world-beater, but you need a player.

I'd look out for the Redskins.. With RG3 out, Cousins is going to start out by throwing to and showcasing his 2nd team guys because he has timing down with them.. You might be able to snag a Aldrick Robinson, Santana Moss, Andre Roberts, etc.... I don't predict a trade there, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Shanny try to get a guy from that offense and they have a surplus of WRs.

With Gordon and Cameron, Browns have a very good WR corp. You have your #1 WR (Gordon), your RedZone mismatch (Cameron), your slot guy (Hawkins), your big, veteran possession WR (Austin), your burner (Benjamin) and your backup TE that can catch if teams forget about him (Barnidge). They really compliment each other well. The KJ-Morgan-Northcutt-Davis group probably had more talent overall, but no one knew what their role was.

...Hawkins is a short yardage guy? I mean he's not going to catch the ball 50 yards down field, but he damn sure can get open from 20 yards on in, regardless of where he is in the offense. And he makes guys miss.

He's not Wes Welker, but he's a good WR.

Brian Hoyer was 8/10 when throwing to backs and tight ends for a 10.4 yards per attempt average, without the #1 back and the #1 TE playing. Outstanding.

Justin Gilbert, CB: +2.0

After struggling in his debut a week ago, the eighth overall selection from the 2014 NFL Draft rebounded in his first start in Cleveland. He may have allowed four of the five passes thrown into his coverage to be caught, but they went for just 29 yards.

Bust.

Gilbert played well yesterday. He got a bit lucky on the aggressive play on the ball which should have been caught by the Saints receiver.

But that is the nature of the position and the game.

Haden was the one who seemed to struggle more yesterday. Although the injury plus Jimmy Graham is a bad combination.

^ I saw that on the broadcast. I'm not sure what exactly they were upset about. The Browns were on offense and nothing really happened that led up to it that I could tell.

Remember, this occurred after the offsides penalty inside our own 10 yard line. The Saints showed all out blitz and someone tried to jump the snap (Vaccaro?). Anyway, I'm assuming Peyton was upset that they were sending everyone or at the lack of discipline.
