Obi Toppin Scouting: Discuss

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The longer I follow basketball, the more value I've learned to place on intangibles like work ethic, character, and BBIQ. The theoretical ceiling set by athleticism doesn't matter all that much if you don't have the intangibles to reach that ceiling.
THIS, a 100x THIS.

Does he keep learning? does he keep adding to his game? does his current skills become sharper and sharper? That tells you the guy is putting in the work, and the NBA doesn't put it in for you.

I got an email invite to a tryout by the Cavs a couple days ago. It’ll cost me $875 and it’ll be at an offsite location. Couple weeks from now.

I’m 36 so little late to the party but I fit the mold of what you guys are describing.

I almost want to take Okongwu over Toppin base on having a better defense than him.

Cavs aren't in a position to ignore defense. Really tough choice this draft.

Toppin for me is the guy you shouldn't pass up on if you slide in the draft order.

Either way,the Cavs need to draft Toppin,Okongwu,Deni or Ball.

I prefer Toppin or Okongwu...

Think the choice will boil down to be the center if we end up with the 4th, 5th or 6th pick if Okongwu is there. Don't think the Cavs will resign TT because it would put up against the tax line with little flexibility.

current 20/21 salary 109m
draft pick 6m est
resign Z and Wade?? 5m est
subtotal 120M
TT (doubt he would accept ) 10m
subtotal with TT 130M
1 FA 2-3m 2m
Total est 132M

This gives Okomgwu 1 year to develop behind Drummond who will likely opt in for the 20/21 season.
After that who knows what the Cavs or Drummond will do?

That being said I would hate to pass on Toppin but think position need at center will be the deciding factor
but I do really like Toppin so have mixed feelings about the choice.

I like Toppin a lot. I don't know or understand why a good wing player is a rare breed these days. He's not a finished product, but few kids in this draft will be.
Also would seem to be a nice compliment to Windler. :fingersx:

Are your comments about liking Toppin and there being a shortage of good wings unrelated?

I think Toppin has the raw skills to develop into a good pro player. It just seems to me that players with that size and talent are not as plentiful as they used to be. Seems to be a guards game these days. Even taller guys want to play in the backcourt.

Toppin isn't a wing, that's why I was asking

I think you take BPA, we are still at that stage.. Toppin has real skills, but I am not convinced he is athlete enough to be elite

Agreed. Never said I wouldn't take Toppin. In fact, I don't really have any strong feelings about anyone in this draft.

I think you may want to re-watch Toppin though. He's an incredible athlete, and it actually translates to games, too.

I just want to make sure we're all on the same page that he's not a wing player. If you watched Dayton he did all of his damage as a roll/pop man and rim running in transition.

IDK what a wing is anymore.. if anything it could be defined by an ability to defend the 3.. the rest is skills you need at any modern position. Handle , range, passing ability, BBIQ..

Toppin can't defend the 3.

Offensively, his handle is solid for a 4 but would be exposed on the wing. As I said, he was heavily featured as a roll/pop man at Dayton. There's not much evidence to suggest he can play on the wing on either end.

He reminds me a lot of John Collins, but I'm not sure he'll rebound as well as Collins does.
