The funny thing about “dog whistles” is it’s suppose to be coded language for your tribe. However, it always seems like only the opposing tribe hears these “dog whistles.”
And what other tribe do you speak of?

Instead of defensiveness, perhaps we could all gain a better understanding of what Odell is supposed to be apologizing and humbling himself for?

Because it’s still largely unclear, aside from the stereotypical “diva” garbage that gets reported by writers who are covering two of the worst franchises in sports at the time of his “offenses.”

Are we supposed to still be mad at him for “outbursts” on teams that have the infrastructure and culture of a Dog Whistle Reddit thread?

Alright I’ll continue to explain where I’m at. I’m a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers. A team that employed LeBron James, the GOAT, who constantly used the word “humbled” with a positive connotation. This is how I was using the term.

All athletes have egos and confidence. They wouldn’t get where they are without it. Nothing wrong with this.

My comment that I wanted Odell to be “humbled” by the situation was rooted in this context: the Browns had an amazing season even without him. Upon his return, I truly hope his mission is to find a way to contribute to that success, not re-establish his stardom in this league at the expense of the team’s success.

So yeah, that’s it. I want the Browns’ success to inspire Odell to fit back into the group accordingly and not think he needs to be Superman. I think that’s fair.

I think my favorite athlete of all time did a good job of expressing it a few years ago.

I think that’s a fair take, and hopeful expectation of his recovery from all of this.

Truly don’t think you meant to come off in any malicious way whatsoever by the way, but I get the alt context as well in which so many fans and national guys have heard the racist types of tropes for too long.

I’m also not sure I’d agree that Beckham hasn’t fit in with the culture of this team or has the ego which needs checked. Dude is just outspoken, that has a negative connotation at nearly all times among popular Black athletes in the media/online in general.

There is undeniable tension there, I think most people feel the challenge to those assertions are warranted.

Not sure that’s a very vast difference either, as I can definitely see both sides.

I love the exchange that just happened between @chrisrich91 and @AZ_ . People who are willing and able to explain their points of view always get points in my book.

I'd also like to add that, just because someone says something might be racially insensitive, or skewed because of race, doesn't mean they're saying "OMG YOU'RE A RACIST!!!"

It's entirely possible to hear someone start to say things like "He's a gym rat" "a real coach's player" "he has moxie" and all those other things we hear about white NBA players all the time. It's okay to point out that it's possible you're assigning those attributes to the person because of the color of his skin. It's both possible to be unaware of inherent biases, and not at the same time being a hooded Klan-member who openly hates people because of race.

There's a middle ground. When you immediately jump to extremes whenever you hear a certain word, that doesn't benefit anyone.

Since this all started with my comment, ill jump in here to clarify, as well.

-i read a comment that included a phrase thats often used as a dog whistle.

-instead of jumping to assumptions, I asked for clarification, and even agreed with your overall message and some specific words you used.

-you clarified, and that was it (for me).

-others jumped in and made comments and I responded to them.

-your initial and subsequent clarifications sufficed, and I agree with AZ that your point is fair.

Thats it. Never called anyone racist, but did ask for clarification so I know who I'm in this group with.

I think Odell legit wants to win. His stardom has already reached it’s apex. I truly do not believe he’s just gonna get bigger and bigger star wise.

However what I believe he realized is he knows his capabilities and he saw what he saw with the Browns. There’s no way this dude is not believing he is on a legit Super Bowl contender and can be legendary on the biggest stage. I really don’t believe he wants to go anywhere and he’s busting his ass to be a missing piece to a super bowl champion. And if they posses a healthy roster— the Browns are going to win a super bowl in the near future and OBJ knows it...

Agreed.

I think Odell has always wanted to win as badly as anyone. Hes mercurial, emotional, wears it on his sleeve, and thats made life in the limelight harder on him than it should be. I dont think there's anything he'd rather do in football than win, though.

I think the more time goes by without odell the more people revert back to the legend of odell rather than the player odell

Everyone always dances around it because they don’t want to have a hot take, but I really don’t care. The problem with Odell is he hasn’t played like a top 30 receiver.

It’s not Baker’s fault. It’s not coach’s fault. It’s not a coincidence how much better our offense was as soon as he went out.

He’s just not a very good receiver at this point. I honestly didn’t watch much of the Giants. I relied on this board for analysis on him. Then I watched every single game he played on the Browns and he is pretty clearly worse than Landry who himself is probably fringe top 20-25 WR

I know no one wants to say it, but the problem is OBJ just isn’t what he apparently once was. He had plenty of drops, plenty of times where he didn’t make plays that top WRs routinely make. Excuses get made over and over for one reason or another, but I’m confident Beckham will be just as bad next year. I really hope I’m wrong for obvious reasons, but the reluctance to just call his poor performance out and blame it on everything else is frustrating to me

The legend of odell Beckham is FAR greater than the player Odel Beckham

I completely agree that the "legend" is greater than reality. He's more famous than he is good. He's also no longer the player he was the first couple years in New York. He's never been the same after that catastrophic ankle injury.

I think placing him outside the top 30 WR's is a bit much. I still had him as a top-10 receiver in the AFC (not gonna go through the entire NFL, but I imagine that places him somewhere around the top 20-25 in the league).

I hope he comes back, and just adds another spice to the meal that is our offense that we've been missing. But, if for some reason he ruins the dish, he has no guaranteed money from us outside of this coming season, so it's not hard to move on from him.

I think that Dallas game showed that he is still Odell Beckham. I agree he's not the same guy he was before the ankle injury, but the issue was that Baker was forcing him the ball, not that Odell was never open. Odell was open all the time, but he and Baker have never managed to figure it out.

Beckham will almost certainly be back next year, though, so hopefully they can finally figure it out now that Baker has broken himself of a lot of bad habits.
