What? Really?

That’s interesting. I think that’s exactly like how they treat Baker. What’s funny is both of the guys you mentioned led their teams to Super Bowls but most people would probably agree that they weren’t the main reason why their teams got there.

If we made the Super Bowl people will make the same arguments about Baker. It will likely be a similar scenario. The QB’s on those teams were not their best or most important players. It would be the same with us and Baker.
Then you clearly do not pay attention.

Baker Mayfield is on the same tier as Jimmy G and Jared Goff were on during their Super Bowl appearance years. If we’re being honest Baker isn’t even as good as they were those years respectively.

Do you think Baker Mayfield right now is better than Jimmy G in 2019 or Jared Goff in 2018? I do not.

I think he's much better than Jimmy in 2019. He's better than Goff too. Those guys cannot create nearly as well as Baker.

Those guys had to be spoonfed eveverything. Baker definitely is executing the offense and can make plays out of structure.

Oh man…….

I disagree with this.

If what you just said were true we wouldn’t be having these discussions about Baker but here we are.

Can we keep the Baker Mayfield isn’t a good QB to the Baker Mayfield thread please? I’m intentionally avoiding that thread like the plague. Comments like this in the OBJ and stefanski threads are going to force me to avoid the browns board all week. And I REALLY don’t want to have to do that

This is irrefutable. Baker makes plays out of structure all the time. It's easily his best attribute and maybe his only elite attribute

He has not been doing that this season.

And to be more specific to Odell I think this is where the big disconnect with him and Baker is. Odell thinks that he’s good enough to get open at will (he is) and when he does he expected his QB to get the ball to him. That’s not happening so Odell has to rely on all of his action to occur within the structure of the offense eliminating a lot of the out of structure action.

Since this is the Odell thread, I'll keep this on topic.

I don't really care if he is or isn't getting hit. The Browns offense works. If OBJ has to sacrifice stats, so be it. But we don't need to recreate the wheel here.

The. Offense only works when we have. Clear advantage. It’s not designed to play from behind or have guys make winning plays. That’s where having a guy like Odell should be an X factor.

You know, like if Chubb or Hunt are just getting contained one day we’re going to have to actually make plays in the passing game downfield. That’s why we “need” a guy like Odell. Aside from all the attention he draws he has the ability to make winning plays. You just have to get him the ball.

I found it frustrating that there were very few attempts to target OBJ when we were clearly in need of a chunk play here and there throughout the game. OBJ was definitely used as a decoy on some of our successful passes to other receivers. The few targets OBJ did get were slow developing, over the middle routes in heavy traffic.

That is a point of aggravation but I'm not sure exactly who is responsible. OBJ, Mayfield, Stefanski, Van Pelt, or maybe the Chargers schemed to stifle him? I don't know. But it seems like a potential weapon being left in the holster when we really could have used one.

Being at the game today it does seem at times that ODell improvises a lot on his routes. I feel like when he was at his best those years with the Giants it was quick slants, go routes, quick hitch where as with us he just seems to be running deep ins or posts right into coverage. Perhaps it’s designed that way to free up something underneath? I don’t know but looks to me like he’s not being used right. And we desperately need Landry back!

My thoughts are:
  • Beckham used to get open with his speed, but he didn't get 100% of his speed back after he broke his ankle in 2017
  • These days Beckham often gets open by improvising routes and Mayfield has trouble tracking those routes.
  • The big $$ contract does not mean he's the #1 receiver. The contract is a sunk cost based on past performance and it only means that he's untradeable and the team can't save money by waiving him.
  • OBJ is still better than practice squad guys like Davion Davis, so as long as OBJ is trying to be a good teammate, and the coaches are not losing their bananas over the situtation, he can find ways to help the team.
  • Up until yesterday, I thought OBJ still had great hands. Very disappointed with that 4th down drop yesterday. #1 recievers don't drop that pass.

I would be on the phone with jax right now trying to get a deal together for Myles jack. Jax needs a WR for Lawrence and we haven’t been able to figure out Odell yet. Urb might try to make this deal as a Hail Mary to keep his job. Jack hasn’t been great this year but he’s like a slightly older jok. Having 2 of those types of LBs on our defense would be a hell of a lot better than walker who looks like he’s running in sand and Mack who just can’t tackle.
