Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Context: I'm old and don't know half of the acts already posted. I love hip-hop but it's been a long time since i could live in it like I used to but I thought I'd throw out links to some of the tracks and acts that I still love...

Juggaknots are one of the most underrated groups of the 90's. That Clear Blue Skies record was ridiculously good. It had its darker themes and insane vocals by Brewin. His style is one of the most unique and technical in the entire field. Even though he's rhyming, you feel like he's really just talking to you and wasn't trying to rhyme. Insanely good. You hear their new album that came out in 08? Good stuff as well.

I used to be big into Sage... so much so that my boy and I actually booked/promoted him in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. If you went to the Sage show at the Blind Lemon circa 99/00, that was us that brought him. Anymore though I haven't been feeling him. Seems like his rhymes have kind of fallen off.

I'm very particular about hip hop, and I've got somewhat of a bias because I was introduced to the genre at such a great time with the late 80s, early 90s. My first rap CD was Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique", which to me IS the greatest rap CD of all time without question. Other groups I followed religiously were of course those three Jewish guys from NYC, A Tribe Called Quest, and Public Enemy. Jay Z and more current artists came later. I could get into a huge rant right about now, but I'll save the debate for another time, I just wanted to showcase a little of my hip hop knowledge (and believe me there's a lot).

One of the nice things about being a genre aficianado (for any type of music) is discovering new artists. Going through some "Spin" magazines (before it became unreadable) I listenend to and really enjoyed a hip hop scene called "grime". Songs came out through pirate radio stations and usually involved very DIY beats (sometimes made on Playstations). What's really particular about the scene too is that all of the artists are British. Yes, they gave us the best rock 'n' roll, and now their ready to storm the rap charts as well. Time to broaden your horizons with the two premier grime artists of British hip hop Dizzee Rascal and The Streets.

First is Dizzee who has three albums out (all big sellers across the pone). His debut CD "Boy In Da Corner" won the Mercury Prize and was named on many top ten lists at the time. His words twist and his pronunciations can get difficult at times, but follow along and you can see the talent. For more club bangers, go for his latest in "Maths and English". This tune is slower than his others, but its a great introduction to his lifestyle and his burb.

Paul's Boutique, ATCQ, PE were all great. People still sleep on EPMD too much when talking about the classics. The first hip hop track I remember hearing and liking was "Crossover". Cypress Hill's first couple of albums were also bonafide classics to me even though I never smoked that ish.

Disagree on the grime though. Sure some of it can be ok but it gets way too repetitive for my liking (I know, everything does these days). Dizzee has a couple good tracks and The Streets is great but I don't know if I consider it rap music (I worked at a music store and no one could agree where to put him). The new Streets record is really good in my opinion, though it's the farthest from the rap genre. The UK has been disappointing me with their output to be completely honest. There have been some really dope Balkan emcees lately and elsewhere in Europe, but I feel the Brits have been putting out a lot of mediocrity.

Best album of '08 to me was probably Elzhi's "The Preface". Great beats all the way through (Black Milk) and some of the nicest rhymes as well. Solid record. Best single was probably "Eye of the Needle" by Pacewon & Mr. Green based on the fact alone that it's impossible not to nod your head when you hear it.

I remember when this shit dropped. The way my friends would listen to the shit, and not realize what it was all about. I died a little inside. Why did I have to be the one white kid in the area I grew up in?

So, I haven't seen my favorite artists anywhere in this thread.
