OSU Recruiting Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
And all those coaches out side of Woody made the HOF because of the recruits they got, not a single one would ever be able to coach in the pros.
Urban won a lot at Bowling Green and Utah with mostly recruits from the previous regime.

Hell, Tressel's natty was with mostly Cooper guys. His biggest issue was that the game started to pass him by.

I think Urban was a good coach at the lower levels, and a fantastic recruiter at the upper levels (Florida and OSU), he was for sure better than average vs other big ten coaches, but I wouldn't say elite at coaching, but man could he recruit. Personally what I say, I think Day is a better coach than Urban. Not trying say Urban isn't a good coach, but at the X's and O's he isn't elite. Day has really impressed me so far.

I'm not a big football guy, but from my perspective, Urban looked just as good, if not better than Day initially but then Herman left for Houston and a couple of chinks appeared in the armor (albeit small ones).

Give any coach enough years and enough personnel changes and you'll start to see the cracks.

Urban's base offense (spread option) was at the top of the sport earlier in his career (BG, Utah, early Florida days). Very few teams were doing what he was doing, and nobody was doing it with the recruits he was doing it with. He, with Herman's help, adopted more of a power spread early in his OSU tenure, which was pretty unique at the time and helped get a National Championship. After that, he didn't really adapt much...until Day arrived. But you could see even early in Day's tenure, Meyer wasn't fully adapting to Day's scheme. 2017 nothing really changed due to JT's limitations as a passer. 2018 the run game was completely broken because Meyer didn't know how to run with an immobile QB. In 2019, once Day got full control, things looked quite a bit different...and better.

There's very few coaches at the College level that have proven the ability to adapt and still recruit and win at a high level. Nick Saban and...Nick Saban? So, Urban is far from alone in struggling to adapt. But he was still good enough to win 90% of his games here. There are lots of coaches who struggle much more to adapt (look at Jim Harbaugh).

What Day is doing right now is elite both from a recruiting and coaching standpoint. Similar to a younger Urban. Moving forward, we will see how he adapts. Given what we've seen from him so far, I like his chances.

I'd also argue that Day is much better at making in-game adjustments than Meyer ever was.

I am not sure, maybe in the 1st half, but those Urban teams always dominated in the second half. What Urban struggled with was always when a team was able to 100% shut down the run and QB option, as we did not have QB's who could lead the offense with their arm. The Urban offense was not designed to play from behind as it did not have a strong passing game.

I think it's tough to come to that conclusion when we've had just one year to watch Day whereas we had nearly two decades of Urban. It's far more difficult to fool opposing teams 15 years down the road when they've seen so much of your work.

And the reason we did not have a strong passing game is because Urban was a bit too loyal to Barrett. The 2015 MSU game will always haunt me.

I guess my point is that at times, he was awfully stubborn whereas Day has shown more of a natural ability to switch up a gameplan if something isn't working.

I wasn't a big Barrett guy, but he did have perhaps the most prolific career of any QB in Ohio State football history. Tough to fault a coach for stubbornly sticking by him.

Day hasn't exactly been presented with many tough decisions yet. They faced little to no adversity last year until the Big 10 championship game and Fiesta Bowl.

We need to give Day more time before we start legit comparing his game-calling to Urban.

But damnit why bring that game up..I will forever be pissed at Urban for that. You don't give one of the best rushers ever 12 carries (3 less than Barrett), who had 1425 yards total in the 10 games before that game, and was by far the best player on our roster. It's not like Barrett was heaving it up! Only 16 pass attempts!!!! Michael Thomas only had 2 receptions!

Jesus..I am about to start Cinco de Mayo right now.

I wanted to share the following article. I think it is definitely worth the time to look over. Enjoy.

Good article. Worth a read. Couple tangential points

1.) The author was recently on Doug Lesmerises podcast talking about the state of Harbaugh and UM football. Worth a listen.

2.) Article mentions Mike D'Andrea who was an uber recruit OSU signed. I played against him in HS. I remember one play where we ran a sweep and I was supposed to block him. I never got withing 10 feet of him, as he ran right by me and made the tackle. I walked back to the huddle laughing, knowing if we called that play 100 times, I'd be able to successfully block him 0 times. Dude had NFL size and speed in HS. He was the same class of Bobby Carpenter and AJ Hawk, but screwed up his shoulder and never played much at OSU.
