So California looks to be passing a bill that will prohibit the NCAA from barring from competition athletes who make money from endorsements.

I'm sure a lot of folks believe this is a great idea. The problem is that it will be impossible to distinguish between an endorsement, and alumni funneling money to players during recruitment. It's basically legalizing paying college players. So you're going to have the wealthiest programs buy up all the talent. Sure, they have an advantage now, but nothing like what we'll see if this becomes the rule.

Other states will have to do it too or California schools will have a massive recruiting advantage...unless the NCAA bans them, lol

Right - I think the NCAA would have to ban California schools in general, because college football and basketball are basically over if you can just pay recruits whatever you want.

Honestly, the biggest things it probably changes is that players won't get in trouble for getting paid, and it cuts out sleazy middle-men - both of which I think are good things. The wealthiest programs already buy the talent.

The fact that it has to be kept secret greatly reduces how much it goes on. If you make it legal, it will explode.

It's already excessive...I'd argue the majority of top players at P5 schools are getting some type of "illegal" payment/benefit. All this does is cut out the middle men and maybe brings back NCAA Football video games lol

I see no problem with student athletes getting paid for their likeness, especially with the college themselves making billions off of them. Still keeping the Universites themselves from paying allows for their profits to help other college athletic programs.

Just like most things there should be a regulatory system set up to make the "endorsements" uniformed and on file so that abusers can be found out and dealt with. Corruption is already there, but being able to be transparent could be beneficial athletes and colleges. Intrigued to see how this all unfolds.

Again...if it was as bad as you say, Pryor and his buddies wouldn't have had to resort to selling memorabilia to make a bit of money. The NCAA prohibition doesn't stop all of it, but it limits it greatly compared to what it would be if there were no restrictions.

This is dangerous and will make the richer programs richer. Paying for endorsements allows almuni the window to legally just pay players. Sure OSU would benefit, but college football will be so unequal I might have to stop watching.

I hate the NCAA, but this is not a solution.

Leave it to California to F things up. Just like everything else. Hope the ncaa bans all the schools from competing for championships.

They should increase the stipends. Make them at least $10k or something. That'll keep schools on a relatively even field spending-wise, but ease the money crunch for those kids.

I think the one advantage that USC and UCLA has is they will have the infrastructure in place to actually get these players endorsement deals since LA is a hot bed for social media already.

Your point about Pryor and that group, just kind of points how there really isn't a huge flow of money from Alumni. Like the big recruits will definitely get more money but it might be from companies and not alumni. Egos will come into play too because if you are the guy at Ohio State, you are going to cash in way more than if you are a backup somewhere else. These big recruits always think they will be the guy the moment they step on to campus. I think it will all even out.

I think where the competitive advantage comes is getting the four star recruits and lower, where USC and UCLA will have agents who can get them brand deal and help them build their social media from day one. Can other places build up that type of infrastructure for what amounts to maybe 100 players?

Oh 100% agree, I have literally said that before. I am usually against the NCAA, just not on this one.

I hope people like you leave and stop commenting on sports forever.

Win for everyone involved.

How is this different from the great American tradition of passing laws that benefit businesses then regulate as needed?

With the exception that this generally benefits people that the businesses profit off of rather than vice versa.

Am I missing something and it’s impossible for the NCAA to go back and put limitations in place if things get out of control in favor of larger schools?

I struggle to see why it’s a step in the wrong direction to let players receive profit from their likenesses that otherwise goes to schools. We’ve done this with literally everything else in the history of America as far as I’m aware. Why should this be an exception?
