Paying College Athletes/Letting Them Get Endorsements

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let's look at, for instance, a guy like Marcus Lattimore. Guy was basically the next Bo Jackson, Adrian Peterson, ect. Then, catastrophic knee injury and his entire career goes up in smoke.

During that time, South Carolina was going to major bowl games and earning tons of money from the SEC. And what does he get? Maybe a 4 year degree and a pat on the back?

Fucked up. Sure, we can say that this hurts the small guys. OTOH, Ohio State beat Miami of Ohio how badly? How many times has Alabama beat an FCS team just for a paycheck?

People are acting like this is going to end parody in NCAA Football. 12 different teams have won a National Title since the BCS started in 1998. All of them from a major powerhouse in college football that spends well over 10 million a year on coaching alone.

Let them earn some money.

If anything, the argument would be made that major college programs will have to deal with the fact that kids may not be as motivated if they’re not fuckin starving and broke as shit.

Giving other programs a chance to take advantage.

There are no REAL reasons to oppose this.

The spirit of amateurism, the coaches not wanting to deal with it, et al.

The world is not black and white like you'd like it to be.

No REAL reasons? There have been plenty of reasons said and unsaid.

I've got a torn labrum, constant knee pain and damaged ligaments in my ankle all of which stemmed from my time playing at BG.

Should I send the athletic department a bill or nah?

Maybe you can send them a bill for your torn vagina? (kidding, but couldnt resist)

I think also think players getting to profit from their likeness and image allows the market to set what the player is worth. If universities start paying players then some of that money could take away from other programs or scholarships for lesser players.

Also there isn't any lag to the amount a player can from when they break out to whatever the university decides they are worth. Endorsements and brand deals will come almost immediately.

If that's truly how it is (it ain't), then there's no need to change anything because they're already getting paid just like they would under this plan, and they have no reason to complain.
I think allowing endorsements would take more money and power out of the hands of the NCAA and into the hands of the athletes.

I also think it could only help the state of college football, and I believe it would cause talent to disperse more than it currently is.

Just can’t get on board with the argument that businesses are just going to start POURING money into athletes with no clout just to get them paid.

Especially publicly.

But allowing universities to sell jerseys and T-shirt’s with player likeness, bringing back video games, et al is a great way for the best players to earn based on their marketability.

Nike's stock is immediately going to tank if they openly spend $85M per year on the 85 scholarship players at Oregon and other universities which they support.

Again, the ramifications of having an open market here, as opposed to under the table dealings is why this won't have nearly the effect you think it will.

Not necessarily. If Oregon suddenly became the best team due to Nike money, the visibility and notoriety would certainly equal more dollars due to apparel sales for Oregon gear and likely Nike in general. Don’t know if it’s enough to recoup that investment, but it’d certainly be enough to be close.

They would t be dumb enough to spend it all in one spot anyway. They’d spread the same $85 mill across the top 10-15 players in college football who already play at Nike schools and watch the money pay dividends.

The law of diminishing returns would suggest that they’d receive very little benefit from this.

Do people not know who Oregon football is and will they be buying more Nike products because of it?

It’s not like Nike is some emerging brand name or trying to establish themselves in the market.

They have 100 percent brand recognition, and their board would never allow this because of how foolish an investment it is.

The players should have the basic human right of being able to profit off their likeness...just as every other human does.

If it needs to be regulated, then regulators...mount up.

This will certainly change CFB and CBB...as a fan, I just hope it doesn't hurt the sport.

Will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

Not saying it isn’t foolish. Phil Knight could do it independently of Nike anyway if he wanted to.

The ultimate question is does paying college athletes make much of a difference in the long run? Without proper financial education and responsibility you’ll just have big name colleges guys going broke because they spent all their money on a car, clothes, jewelry, etc. Don’t know about you, but if I was handed even $5,000 in college I probably wouldn’t have done anything worthwhile with it.

Obviously it’s rampant in the NBA and NFL. Not saying they shouldn’t be paid, just pointing out that it could ultimately usher in a lot of unintended distractions.
