I am curious to see what kind of market will be out there for Amed after the season. I find uncertainty in the idea that it is only a SS market and it wouldn't surprise me to see a team willing to give him a chance at 2B. If that is true then his market could be much larger than most of us expect.
In trade dollars a SS is worth a lot more than a 2B...

He is being "sold" as a SS.. Buyer can do whatever they want with their merchandise.

Too bad we can't trade Amed to the Twins for 2023... That's a decent "fit"

Not arguing that at all. My point was that his market might be larger than expected.

I honestly see Amed as more of a 3B than a 2B if he is to move away from SS. It's just that we never had the space at 3B for him. He makes very few errors and generally makes good strong accurate throws, he doesn't seem to have great side to side agility (compare him to Gimenez for instance), so basically the tools that play up well at 3B but not at 2B.
You could be right, but I think his athletic ability would translate well to 2B. The pivot is what I question. I find it hard to believe that a decent SS can't make a good 2B, but that's just me.

Sure I don't disagree with you there. He could play 2B with a little extra training. Maybe more importantly regardless if he is thought of as a SS, 3B, or 2B, (personally what I'd rank him as in descending order) the fact that other teams might be looking at him to play 3B or 2B opens up possibilities for teams trying to fill in a hole by thinking outside of the box. So your initial point is a good one in that it might be foolish to only consider the SS market.

The main thing against putting him at those positions is I just don't think it's too often that teams will acquire a player to play a position for 1 year that they've never really played much before. It happens but that training is more likely to lead to long term yields than short term ones.

It does happen as you mentioned, see Trevor Story.. Or not...

Amed will be traded as a shortstop.. If another team, is willing to pay that price to try/play him at 2B, 3B, LF, DH, etc. .. Awesome.. Let's make another deal with them while we are at it.

Trevor Story wasn't under 1 year of control though and long term he can fill in Bogey's spot.

I think it can explain why Bogey stayed at SS despite being the inferior defender. Well you've got only one year left of the guy, why even bother?

I would say this is the same kind of thinking that kept Amed at SS despite the consensus opinion Gimenez is/was a better SS.

Someone will pay to play Amed at SS for 2023. May even be us.. We have the inside track anyway.

Bogaerts was kept at SS in a minor part, because the heir apparent, Jeter Downs, hasn't been able to hit.. Downs may figure that out... but, all indications are that he's just not going to be the kind of hitter the Red Sox expected.. Dicky York.. the next in line after Downs.. has shown an inability to throw the ball deep in the hole.. so, the Sawx have moved him to 2B.. it's a good move, imho.. but not necessarily for York as he now has Trevor Story in front of him..

That leaves the Sawx with a choice of keeping Story at 2B (good).. moving Story back to his original spot of SS (better) or moving Story to 3B (best, especially if Devers cannot be extended) while adding a guy like Rosario to SS with the idea Rosario WILL be extended.. The Red Sox have a small crowding / glut problem at 1B (Hosmer, Dalbec, Casas and Devers if he's resigned). so, this might be a fit both clubs while providing flexibility to the Sawx:

1B: Devers, Casas Hosmer
2B: Arroyo, Story, York, Downs
SS: Rosario, Story, Yu Chang
3B: Story, Devers

While this group isn't going to wow anyone with their defense.. all of these guys can and have hit.. Nothing is imminent.. but the Red Sox, like every other club can see a value in Rosario.. an ability to extend him at a reasonable cost.. and a guy who's defense at a premium position is average to slightly above average.. no more... no less...

So.. Who besides Dalbec would anyone want in return for Rosario?.. Perhaps no one and a rejection of a deal with the Sawx, outright?..

Guys like Rosario don’t get extended. They bounce around the league on short-term deals (see: Cesar Hernandez)

A trade is the only thing that makes sense. Get a couple guys in the low minors and hope one pans out.

I am not saying dont trade Rosario, but he is significantly better than Hernandez.

The way Rosario played this year has made me give a bit of pause about so quickly dismissing an extension. His defense has been immensely better than last year.

I’d actually argue Cesar was a little bit better than Amed.

Cesar was a better hitter for sure, and although Amed plays a more important position defensively, he’s below average as a SS.

This isn't about if Rosario is significantly better than Hernandez and more about if one of Arias or Rocchio are significantly better than Amed. That or is $6.2M worth the difference between Amed and one of Arias/Rocchio?

While Amed has been much better on defense this season, he is nowhere near as good as any of Arias, Rocchio or Gimenez. Even if you take Arias and Rocchio out of the equation the MIF is better defensively with Gimenez and Freeman than it is with Rosario and Gimenez.

I get that point for sure, it's hard for me because Rocchio and Arias are conceptiually better than Ahmed, but havent proven it yet at the MLB level, and obviously to me Giminez is an all star gold glove, 300 hitting with some power 2nd basemen, I dont see him switching back to his natural position anytime soon just like Jose got "stuck" at third for similar reasons, so i take Giminez out of the equation now.
