Poll: Worst Coach in Cavs History

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

If you had one game you had to lose, who would you want to coach it?

John Beilein was who I voted for. The Cavs have had some shit coaches in the past and have had guys who wanted out mid-season before but nobody who just threw up their hands and said "fuck it" like Beilein.

What is amazing is that if you just watched some video clips from CAVS.com you knew he was overmatched as soon as Salt Lake City summer league. How could he have possibly come in so unprepared?

I'm torn on who to vote for. Beilein is such an easy target because he was just such a colossal fuckup. But he did manage to assemble a decent staff so he gets a +1 for that. I really can't fault the guy for taking the job, but the number of red flags about his hiring made it lucky at best that he would succeed.

Byron Scott on the other hand... He was supposed to be the PG whisperer. He drafted Dion Waiters because he saw himself in Dion. Guy was more concerned with golfing than he was coaching. Heard rumors he would only be there for the beginning of practice days and immediately dip to go golfing. And honestly, I think 26 straight losses pretty much solidifies him as the worst coach of all time.

I agree -- that's a tough call, and it's the two guys I'm torn between. A couple of the Stepien guys -- Delaney in particular -- sound like they were even more clueless, but I just don't have enough knowledge about them. As for Beilein v. Byron Scott, at least Beilein tried. But then if you go back and look at those rosters Scott had, and how many of those guys appear in these stiff threads...maybe I'd go golfing too if that's all I had. Forgetting 2010-11, which was going to be a trainwreck no matter what -- here's what Scott had in 11-12:

Antawn Jamison
Alonzo Gee
Kyrie Irving
TT
Casspi
Anthony Parker
Lester Hudson
Harangody
Sessions
Boobie
Samardo Samuels
the corpse of Varajao
Donald Sloan
Manny Harris
Ryan Hollins
Semih Erden
Luke Walton
Eyenga

That's just absolutely horrible. The only two guys who had any business starting in the NBA at that point in their career were Irving and TT, and they were both rookies.

So I guess I'm still waffling between those two guys.

So many bad choices to choose from! You can make a strong argument for anyone of them. However; Scott is the cream of the crud.

The worst thing about Scott and his slick, used-car act was that it let him hang on for three full years. Also, he's the big reason we took Dion. That certainly doesn't say much for Scott.

At least Beilein had the courtesy to flame out so quickly and so spectacularly that we could get a replacement in there. On the other hand, that "courtesy" was due to sheer incompetence, not because Beilein was trying to do the Cavs a favor. Trying to force a practice on Christmas Day does take a very special type of cluelessness.....

Fun little fact about Delaney. Prior to becoming the Cavs head coach, his only previous coaching experience was at Lakeland Community College, and at Dyke College, which was just a business college in Cleveland. The fact that he was hired at all is pretty amazing.

I wish we had more details, because the stories that must have come out of his tenure to earn that "Worst 5 coaches in NBA history" mention by Basketball Digest in 2004 must have been awesome. Just trying to imagine the horror....

Just to add to the overall atmosphere, one of Stepien's more classic moves was to change the Cavs theme song to a polka, which he had delivered to local radio stations along with a pound of kielbasa. There just aren't words, so we'll have to let the music speak for itself. Delaney coaching, guy like Chad Kinch wearing the Wine and Gold, and then this over the speakers in the Coliseum....

Did he or someone in his family own/run Delaney's Chase Inn in Mentor?

I always heard he owned that bar. No idea if that's true

Dunno, but it sounds about par for the course.
