May 16, 2005 - What we had previously known as Arkira Kurosawa's Oni has now been reborn as NioH, the first of three planned PlayStation 3 launch-window titles from KOEI Japan. A big supporter of the PlayStation 2 throughout its life-cycle, KOEI wants to hit the next generation with some serious force. Directed by the legendary Kou Shibusawa, it looks to do just that.
A little unusual in its visual style, NioH's trailer opens up with a beautiful drumming and dance sequence that serves as the prelude to a war between various Japanese soldiers and fiery bull creatures As the two armies approach each other, there are literally hundreds of different characters shown onscreen at once (it reminds me a bit of some of the old Final Fantasy XI CG sequences). When the two sides collide, the action pulls closer to show off individual battles between samurai warriors and the game's blonde main character. There's an absolute ton of violence in it, and the blood and swords are flying everywhere.
