With the talk of where is a good spot to draft Barkley, it got me wondering what positions are more important on a team than others.

For this purpose, I'm going to lump a few of the positions together (G, CB, OLB, DE, DT, CB).

  1. QB - of course
  2. DE - need to get to the #1
  3. LT - Need to protect #1
  4. WR1 - Need to catch the ball from #1
  5. CB - need to stop 4
  6. C - protection, line calls
  7. RT - more protection
  8. MLB - runs the D
  9. FS - coordinates the pass D
  10. RB - falling due to passing league
  11. WR2 - passing league
  12. TE - becoming bigger weapon
  13. DT - big guys to plug the middle easier to find
  14. OLB - LBs becoming less important with passing league
  15. SS - wasn't quite sure...lol
  16. FB - FB are becoming extinct...thought about putting slot WR in the list instead.

I wouldn't even break it down into that much specifics.

My list is only 3 things.

The most important position in the NFL by a wide margin is obviously QB. If you have a bad QB, it's virtually impossible to consistently win games in the NFL. If you have a great QB, it generally masks most flaws your offense may have. An elite QB can make WRs, TEs and OL all look better than they really are.

Second is pass rush ability. Defensive end, defensive tackle, outside linebacker in the a 3-4, doesn't matter where it comes from really. If a defender can consistently beat a blocker 1 on 1 and create pressure without his coordinator having to blitz, that's uniquely valuable.

Third is pass coverage ability. Outside corner, slot corner, free safety, strong safety, linebacker. The position is less important to me than the ability to not get beat in a 1 on 1 coverage situation. The more players you can put on the football field that can win their matchup in coverage without help, the more valuable those players are.

Everything else, including OL, is far less valuable to me.

This was posted in another thread and seems mostly right to me.

I've posted it and it was from an article where that image was attributed to Dorsey's philosophy. So, it's not a far-fetched to think it's close. For an example, this was what his roster looked like in KC:
