Midsommar 4/10

I'll likely be in the minority here, because most people loved Hereditary, but I'll just say it really mirrors that movie's triumphs and faults.

Both films had an amazing lead actress. Toni Collette was Oscar worthy in Hereditary, and Florence Pugh is so good in this too. So I have no idea why Ari Aster can't cast the correct lead actor to save his life. The son in Hereditary killed that movie for me. Cringe-worthy acting took me out of it too many times. Similarly, the bargain bin Chris Pratt they cast here is just not good at all, especially when paired with Pugh.

Both films had an amazing first hour that set up what you think will be a new gen classic in horror. The last hour of both botch the hell out of them. I can't figure out why. Maybe he gets too ambitious and loses focus with his scripts. Some of the stuff probably sounded awesome on the page and just doesn't work on screen. Maybe he trusts his actors to pull off things that they don't have the chops for. Whatever it is, both films have amazing premises that they just can't successfully pull off.

Some very similar themes in this one, so there's no subtlety to the type of stuff Aster is into. And that's fine. I just hate being all-in on what I think will be a defining film, only to laugh at unintentional ish and cringe at terrible set pieces. Oh well.

Speaking of 3D...Cool 3D World is a horrible follow.

Ummmmm... I came in here to say how terrifying and creative Hereditary was.

I guess I don’t watch enough movies. Now that I won’t be able to sleep ever again, I have plenty of time to see more.

I think this director marches to a different beat. Really impressed.

Prob won’t see midsommer bc this hereditary was too much for me. I need some time to recover. It’s that sickening, awkward, suspenseful horror.

Saw Lion King.

Absolutely horrible outside of Timon/Pumba.
I'll likely never see this movie or any of the other movies Disney seems to be remaking from their Renaissance era, but this blurb from a review of the The Lion King seems to hit the nail on the head on why they should stop bastardizing these fan favorites:

On a conceptual level, “The Lion King” betrays the power of the hand-drawn artwork that once put the wonder into Disney animation from its earliest features. Favreau’s movie fails to grapple with how the unreality of the studio’s lush 2D artwork unlocked kids’ imagination and made it so much fun to suspend disbelief; the digital wizardry denies our minds the permission they need to dream. Julie Taymor’s award-winning Broadway adaptation is so transportive because it celebrates its artifice, not in spite of it. Favreau has likened the process of making this film to restoring an architectural landmark, but at the end of the day, he’s merely gentrified it.

Trail to Busan (8/10)

This was on Netflix, and it's a Korean zombie flick. This movie was just fun. A businessman is taking his daughter by train to Busan to her mother in the midst of the zombie apocalypse, and the virus manages to get aboard. Claustrophobic and intense, if this had a larger scope it would've been the perfect World War Z. There were a few times that I would mutter "oh shit", and that's when you know you've got a good zombie flick. Yes, it features running zombies, but it's all done well and to great effect.

It's two hours long; which I thought would be detriment, but I was engaged from start to finish. There are subtitles too, but it's not bad since there's not too much exposition. I would detract a few points for a few shoddy CGI moments, and some typical zombie movie tropes (you'll recognize these moments when they happen). Still, this was a very pleasant surprise and worth the watch.

Just saw this, and I agree with the recommendation. Somewhat predictable, but really well done, and very well acted.

Yep and rumor is there’s a sex tape out there with her somewhere that nobody has seen yet. I’m hoping it gets released eventually, but it hasn’t yet.
Sandra Bullock strikes me as the kind of woman who would just lie there while you do all the work.

I thought Lion King was good. Not as good as the original, of course. The original animation definitely makes you use your imagination more and it also showed much more emotion with the characters. But, I still liked the new one. The story is just too good for me to not like it.

Seth Rogen as Pumbaa was perfect. He absolutely nailed it. He was easily the best part of the movie.

I wish I had a better memory of the 90s Disney movies. I know I've seen them all plenty of times, but I was just too young to really remember. Even Lion King, I remembered bits and pieces but not the whole thing until I rewatched the original about a week ago.

Go out and make a baby. In a couple of years, you'll have them all memorized!
