Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I actually really liked Godzilla vs Kong. I knew that I would, I’ve been a sucker for monster movies since I was a kid. Just take it for what it is and don’t expect any deep character or plot development.

Was also nice to be back in a theater, haven’t done that in over a year.

Started watching X-Men: Apocalypse, because I never watched this or Dark Phoenix and figured why the hell not.

Is this movie a comedy? Because I'm seven minutes in and I've laughed out loud at least five times. So even if this movie is stupid, at least it looks like it will be entertaining in a bad way.

So I went ahead and watched both Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix last night.

Apocalypse wasn't good, but it was entertaining. Dark Phoenix was a giant pile of shit.

The former film didn't take itself too seriously, and there were a lot of hilariously ridiculous deaths, plus some fun scenes like when Quicksilver saves everyone from the mansion blowing up or when Wolverine slashes up a bunch of jerks. They definitely force the issue with Mystique way too much because Jennifer Lawrence is by far the most famous person in the movie. Mystique is not that important of a character, and she's not even useful in a lot of situations. If you're going to put her in the forefront, design the story in a way that allows her to actually utilize her powers. Also, you can tell that Lawrence is over being painted blue, because she spends like five minutes of the movie in makeup and the rest as Jennifer Lawrence with 80's hair. Apocalypse looks dumb as hell, but he's enjoyable enough as a villain. Magneto kills, conservatively, a billion people and it seems like everyone was kind of just cool with it. Mostly, the movie works because it's bad in a dumb, fun way.

Dark Phoenix, though. Oof. It's not fun at all. It's difficult to tell this story with Sophie Turner, because she's not a great actress and has utterly failed to make me care about her character. Honestly, it's hard to care about most of these characters, and that's what makes trying to tell such a downer of a story fail where Apocalypse sort of worked. You don't really care about most of the characters in Apocalypse either, but the story is so over the top insane and the spectacle so grand that it doesn't matter. Here, it's all about saving Jean Grey, a character who kind of sucks. The two most enjoyable characters are Quicksilver and Nightcrawler. Quicksilver doesn't really get anything to do and Nightcrawler is primarily used as a plot device. So yeah, bad movie is bad.

Also, Apocalypse has the single greatest moment yet seen in any X-Men film:

Nobody (7/10)
Big fan of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad, so was really looking forward to this Bob Odenkirk flick. It was good, not great.

Sounds like you're a fan of Vince Gilligan, the writer for both those shows.

Odenkirk's role as Saul is definitely outside what he's typically done in his career. The dude's an awesome comedic actor.

Raya and the Last Dragon was a really good kids movie.

It is amazing what they can do with animation these days.

I watched Compliance on Netflix the other day. I rated it a 5 out of 10. It is based on a true story where a man calls a fast food restaurant pretending to be a police officer. He then convinces the manager that one of the staff committed a theft and the call escalated from there.

Anyone seen it yet? I am going to puff some stuff and watch this weekend.

Ha I just watched. I puffed some stuff myself and loved it.

If you're just looking for a good Mortal Kombat movie, you'll like it. Good to great fight scenes, pretty good CGI, and some pretty gory moments. Although the lead actor is pretty god awful, there was enough going on with other characters that it didn't really hinder the movie as much as it could've. Dragged a bit during your typical training arc but thought the payoff was good.

It's cheesy. Its plot is over the top with some questionable catchphrase choices but it's fookin' Mortal Kombat. That's why I am watching it.

Just finished watching it.

I'd give it a 5/10... which is pretty damn high for a Mortal Kombat movie. I'm not sure how else they could've improved on the subject matter. My wife, who has no idea what "Mortal Kombat" even is, enjoyed the whole thing.

I'm watching Nobody and I honestly can't tell if this movie is supposed to be a parody or not. There are times when it is utterly ridiculous and others where it is played so seriously.
