Banshees of inisherin. It was very good, but
its a particularly unsettling ending, for anyone thinking of watching.

The only criticism was
actually cutting off his fingers. I understand the artistic decision but practically, and when considering it in the context of the story without the subtext, its impossible to suspend disbelief and consider it realistic.
Ya know I found it easier to digest the concept when I framed it as the manifestation of his own depression. I think the self mutilation has less to do with him manipulating someone else and getting what he wanted and more to do with a response to the “despair” he felt. I think self harm was the end game for him based on his own demons and nothing else [/ISPOILER

Difficult watch for sure, but a good film. 7/10

A take I read was that he did it for relief from the pressure (he commented on being finally free) from needed to actually create something successful.

But I really just kind of think it's a flimsy plot device crowbarred in.

It's very enjoyable til the end imo. It's not perfect but what it does well it does really well.

It's the time of the year where we watch the Oscar nominated movies.

Last night we watched Mrs Smith Goes to Paris, which is great (and streaming free on peacock)

Of the other best picture nominations, I've also now seen
Avatar
Elvis
Everything Everywhere All at Once - weird movie
The Fabelmans
Top Gun Maverick

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Meh. The all Black Panther Marvel intro was really cool, but the movie itself was bland. I did enjoy the fight between Black Panther and Namor at the end. It was a bit more violent than your average Marvel movie fight. But the movie's resolution just seemed really silly.

The best scene in the movie was Michael B Jordan's brief cameo, which just furthers my belief that they should have used the multiverse to bring him back from the dead and made him the new Black Panther. He's got the gravitas to carry a movie in a way Shuri's actress just does not.

That's a really good idea..

Yeah, the main problem with the movie is that it felt like a bunch of supporting actors without anyone to carry the film. It reminds me of the Thor movies before Taika Waititi figured the character out and Hemsworth took a leap forward as a leading man.

Everything an at once is so overrated.

Tries so hard. Just "that's so random" humor.

And then there's A BAGEL!

Ryan Coogler wrote Black Panther 2 before Chadwick Boseman died which I think he rewrote to make Wakanda Forever. The movie might have been better if he had to write it from nothing after Chadwick Boseman died, I'm sure a lot of the original script was repurposed. I also think Coogler was kind of handcuffed by the fact that Falcon and the Winter Soldier was also about how to move on and someone reluctantly picking up the mantle.

That actually makes a ton of sense.

Yeah. I mean this movie had minimal hype. I honestly had forgotten about it until I saw your post. The first movie had a ton of hype. And a sequel starting Michael B Jordan would have a ton of hype as well.

I just rewatched the first one. Will watch the second one tomorrow.

Did you like Elvis, i found the movie to be over rated.

I enjoyed it.

I knew Coronal Parker took advantage of Elvis, but never realized it so extreme that he wouldn't even let Elvis tour internationally. Not long after the movie I was in Vegas and saw an Elvis display at casino were I was playing a poker tournamen (Westgate) that it used to be the International Hotel that Elvis played at in the movie.

My Dad was a huge Elvis fan and took me to see him a few times growing up. The similarities of young Elvis to Prince (who I like like he liked Elvis), never clicked with me until watching the movie.

I do wish the movie spent a more time on young Elvis. That part, especially this scene, was my favorite part of the movie

The movie even had a song (Motherless Child, not an Elvis song) that Prince covered. Prince also covered Jailhouse Rock.

could have been a better movie if they left out the weirdest parts.

I'm not one to complain about my favorite movie franchises continuing even though the new ones might suck. All it takes is instead of trying to capture the nostalgia of earlier films, just tell a good story. Jurassic Park, terminator, and anything else that will be resurrected back up. I enjoy these and would never want to see them stop making movies with those properties.

God, yes.

I was so excited midway through with the fake credits.

It’s that weird combo of action forward movie where the actors and action are fine, but the rest is so god awful that is just ruins absolutely everything.
