With the 182nd pick in the RCF Mock, the Atlanta Falcons select:
ISRAEL MUKUAMU, CB, South Carolina 6041 | 212 lbs. | JR. Bossier City, La. (Parkway) 11/28/1999 (age 21.42)
STRENGTHS: Oversized frame with the wingspan of a pterodactyl…moves with limber, flexible joints and adequate foot quickness…uses his long arms to press and ride receivers at the line of scrimmage…can cover ground once he unfurls his long legs…makes plays on the ball in the air with a large catch radius…soft hands to make full extension grabs…his long arms also help him make lasso tackles…the South Carolina coaches say he and Jaycee Horn led the culture change in the program…experienced at cornerback and safety, lining up both inside and outside…led the team in interceptions each of the last two seasons.
WEAKNESSES: Leggy, high-cut athlete…his longer gait delays his ability to suddenly redirect…bites on initial route fakes and savvy receivers will have no problem separating from him if he doesn’t jam…resorts to grabbing once beaten and will be a flag magnet until he fixes this…half-hearted tackler…more likely to go backwards on tackle attempts than drive through his man…needs to add more glass to his diet and improve his toughness at contact…doesn’t use his length as a weapon to tear through blocks…ball production declined in 2020. SUMMARY: A two-year starter at South Carolina, Mukuamu switched between cornerback and free safety in former head coach Will Muschamp’s defense, seeing reps outside, in the nickel and field safety. He made a name for himself as a sophomore with a team-best four interceptions, including three against Georgia’s Jake Fromm, including a pick-six. When he stays in position, Mukuamu creates a sizeable shadow over wide receivers with the natural reflexes to disrupt passing lanes. Regardless if he plays corner or safety, false steps are rampant on film and his toughness doesn’t consistently match his imposing size.
Overall, Mukuamu offers intriguing length, flexibility and ball skills, but he is a raw, traits-based prospect and his NFL position will depend on scheme, projecting as a press-man corner who can be a match-up defender.
This pick was done at random which is as good as any way to select a player for the Falcons.
The Ravens and @Rookie are on the clock for the final pick.
