Not scientific but I ran some of these names by my gf who is not from Cleveland. Her rankings:

Guardians (clear favorite)
Captains (it’s ok)

(large gap)

Spiders
Foresters (where are the forests? All I see are some woods) yes that’s a direct quote
Commodores

So outsiders perspective on that one. I think the top two are both fine. I am swinging back to Guardians. I saw it pointed out that Oliver Hazard Perry was a Guardian of the British Invasion. We have an active Coast Guard here. Can play up some of that as well with the Lake theme if we want.
Commodores works for me. Perry, the Hero of Lake Erie in the War of 1812, attained the rank of Commodore. And you've got the alliteration thing going and the connection to the water. You've got a connection to local history, a connection to Lake Erie, and it sounds pretty good rolling off the tongue. No connection to Cleveland baseball history like Spiders and Forresters, but it's a better name.

Guardians is OK, but I think Commodores works better. It's kind of like Cavaliers - who are depicted as fighting swordsmen. Commodore is a naval rank and Commodores don't engage in hand-to-hand combat like swordsmen, but they are associated with battle. Designing a logo will be tough, but I think the name works. If we HAVE to give up the Indians after 106 years I would go with Commodores with Guardians as my second choice.

If marketing merchandise is the priority you go with Spiders. They could have a lot of fun with huge, gnarly tarantulas on T-shirts, caps, etc.

Blue Waffles

Just go all the way - The Cleveland Blue Balls.

God knows we've waited long enough for a World Series championship. And you could rename the team if we win one.

Someone isn't well-versed in the way of the internet.

Although, "go all the way" and "blue balls" in the same sentence gave me a chuckle.

Well, if it was mentioned earlier, it's a long thread to read, and...ain't nobody got time for that.

Be sure to turn safe search off before you look it up.

While you're at it, you might want to check out the following and let me know if they'd make good baseball team names:

Goatse
Tubgirl
Lemonparty.org
Meatspin

Uh...if your point was that I didn't know what blue balls actually are, that's the entire reason behind the name.

I've still got baseball blue balls from 1997.

If we want to go with a Naval theme why not

Cleveland Seamen
or
Cleveland Real Admirals
