Rich Rodriguez fired, reports say

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I still believe Harbaugh is headed to the 49ers. There is no reason for him to uproot his family from Stanford to try and fix that Michigan mess.

Michigan was a destination for high school athletes who wanted a pro-style offense with dreams of being in the NFL someday. Getting away from that in favor of a gimmicky offense was a terrible idea. Allowing pro-style offensive talent recruited by Lloyd Carr rot on the bench was a terrible idea. Rich Rodriguez set Michigan back irreparably without the NCAA violations.

I'm not sure why we're calling the spread a gimmicky offense when the top two teams in the nation run it, and many other successful teams run something very similar as well. Certainly, Michigan was a great destination for pro-style players, but there is a lot more to it. It's a highly respected school, and Ann Arbor is a beautiful town, there is a more of a draw for recruits than just the system they run. The problem for Rodriguez wasn't that he sat highly recruited talent, it was that Carr left him with so little. He's had to play a steady stream of underclassmen, and whoever gets to take over next will get a team returning 20 starters, with about half of those guys eligible for another year after that - a pretty nice situation. I'm not going to argue that Rodriguez has done even an adequate job so far but this is an excellent argument for having to let a coach graduate a class. Rodriguez's 2-deeps have almost, if not always, had a majority of underclassmen. Very few coaches can succeed with that situation.

Quite the dick move by Michigan.

Release a statement saying it's just speculation....then fire him anyway.

Class class class.

Great timing, UM...waiting until now probably screws their recruiting class. Not that their classes have been that great anyway of late.

Yeah, my brother just goes to school there. I didn't mean to make him sound like an "insider." I thought "FWIW" and "rumblings" would have made that clear. My bad.
