Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Rubio will play NBA basketball again, but I don’t see how the Cavs make any significant investment in him. My guess is that he will miss camp and the start of next season. I could theoretically see him back playing by the end of 2022/early 2023. Even giving him a roster spot on a min. deal is tenuous. He may not even be interested in that, may even rehab overseas. If he was down, I would do it for a very small, minimum or slightly above…but a 1 year deal…only to continue possessing his bird rights…with the understanding..get healthy…show us what you have left and if it all checks out, hell yeah we would talk longer term and bigger contract the next summer.

That being said, I think the Cavs are now highly likely to use Rubios near 18mil as the basis for a bigger move to address a need. That ends the bird rights thing even if he did want to eventually come back. But this is a cutthroat business. Dan is always willing to take $ on to make the team better or to gain an advantage by extracting assets and Altman Is not afraid to make a deal. They have to take the hand they’ve been dealt and make the best out of it. With RR healthy the Cavs likely weren’t trading him without getting an amazing return…but now they have a perfect vehicle sitting right there, a contract that can have value to certain teams and a contract big enough to make us real players in multiple.

..

I think they need to use his contract. Rubio's ceiling salary wise is probably MLE now when he is healthy. I don't think there is any reason to tie up using him as an asset to preserve any bird rights.

At the start of the 23/24 season, Rubio will be 33 coming off his second ACL tear with a career average of 11pts and 7 assists per game. I just don't see how he could be worth more than the MLE at that point.

Dont see how you DON'T make another move using his contract and the pick. Adding Rondo helps stabilize the PG production from the bench, but it doesn't add much in terms of scoring. Cavs still need a G/F scoring threat for the bench to go with Cedi-Cheese and K-Love, imo.

I'd bet on us getting him back

Everyone loves each other, I really think he's going to be serviceable in some capacity.

Even if not playing, coaching

Still supporting the team, even with his recent ACL tear.

I've mentioned it before. Do right by Ricky and garner some good karma and reputation around the League. If he wants to come back, sign him to an extension. His game isn't based on athleticism and his impact on the team is both on, and off, the court. Don't trade him just to get value out of his contract. Value the person he's been to the franchise and what he can, and still, means to the team.

I promise I don't hold it against him, but has anyone heard of Sexton being with the team since his injury? Even with the Cleveland Clinic being here, he chose to rehab out of state. Ricky isn't just in town (I wouldn't blame him if he shipped his family back to Spain and joined them as soon as he could travel), he's sitting with his teammates during a game. That's big.

I don't think we do anything with Rubio's contract. He wants to be here, helped build the current team, and I think we re-sign him in some capacity for the bench (if he doesn't retire). Jefferson, Frye, and James Jones showed us how important locker room vets are.

There is little doubt in my mind he will be kept.
I think Kevin Love wants to stick around now which is pretty funny just based on his interview post game yesterday

I think there are ways for the Cavs to use his contract and still keep him around. Whoever trades for his contract will most likely buy him out. We can bring him back as a coach or consultant for the rest of the season.

Realistically we don't need his bird rights moving forward. We can use an exception to pay him. I'm not even sure who pays him to rehab next season even at vets minimum, its more about tying up a roster spot than the money. He will have to show that is fully healthy in 2023 to be competing for mini MLE money or full MLE.

I have waited some days to talk about it but here are my two cents. (maybe some more)

1. First of all, i have followed Rubio's career since he entered the league, hes the player i would have loved to be if i had any talent playing basketball, so you can say im biased here

2. It cant be a coincidence that teams were he has arrived have vastly improved. Jazz, Suns and now the Cavs took a massive step towards contention playing with him.

3. I dont know how many players can contribute so much to a team's chemistry, even in the first year around the group. Donovan Mitchell, devin Booker and some more stars talk about how positive was having rubio teaching them.

4. The Cavs are headed in the right direction. I really like this team, even if Rubio has played his last game (i hope he comes back). A lot of young players with a great attitude and playing a great defense. I really like Garland and i think he has benefited even more than Love of having Rubio in the team.

5. Is it a luxury to have two very good point guards in the team?. I think it is, but in the good way. The cavs could afford to have elite playmaking in the whole 48 minutes and it was a huge adventage. Besides garland and Rubio were really good playing together

6. With Garland, Markannen, Mobley and Allen very young and locked long term (assuming Garland signs an extension), the Cavs will need to start addressing their needs signing veteran free agents. Taking care of the Rubio situation sends a positive message.

7. As i writed last month, I had never seen Rubio happier. I was pretty sure he had found a team were he wanted to be, and i think he still wants to be long term. He likes american basket way more than european. Of course hes not going to be offered a big contract, but once the rehab starts, if it goes well, and Rubio's game does not need him to be athletic, i dont know the CBA really well, but maybe a 3 year extension not guaranteed after year 1 would be possible?

8. i see that yesterday he was around the team and he still wants to help. now that's a leader

I said this before in other threads, but Rubio was in the top 3 of the Cavs most important players this year in terms of contributing to wins. His loss is massive.

Which of Garland, Allen, or Mobley was he more important than? Answer is "none of the above." Probably #4, though.

If they use his contract they need to get something very good. Replacing what he brings is close to impossible and the team needs him. This team isn't contending this year, so any move with his contact should be looking to the future
