Love him or hate him, he obviously had a huge role in expanding the NBA into the global brand that it is today.

He also cock blocked the Lakers from trading pennies on the dollar for Chris Paul, so there’s that.

He deserved better than how he was treated at the end by fans. I was an NBA fan back when it was hard to watch a playoff game on national television, and he made it arguably as big as soccer by the end of his run. I hope fans can put away the haterade now that he has passed on.

RIP Dave.

He supported Gund's request for extra draft picks after Stepien and prior owners had traded them away. Without that concession the team may have moved. Some national media outlets were against it but Stern supported Cleveland as an NBA city.

I personally loved david stern. He embraced the heel role like no other person with his power. I cant remember what draft it was, but he literally trolled the crowd the entire first round as they booed him. He enjoyed his job and was damn good at it.

rip king dave

Stern came off as a smug, unlikable man but he was demonstrably great for the NBA and the game of basketball. He turned a failing league with major internal problems into a global powerhouse by utilizing his best assets, the players. He highlighted Bird/Magic, MJ and later Shaq, Kobe and LeBron. His shrewd business dealings balanced the union and owners as well as the TV contracts so that the league didn't crush itself under it's own weight.

RIP David Stern.

I once got seated next to him at Il Mulino in New York City. He accidentally knocked the huge block of cheese that they shave table side out of the waiter’s hands and knocked our glasses off the table. Stern apologized, picked everything up and finished shaving the cheese onto our plates while the waiter ran crying into the back. Before he left, he put his arm around the waiter and told him everything would be okay. The waiter turned out to be Patrick Ewing.

Big, if true.
