Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think they are under rated.

Everyone credits Nirvana, a great band, but not the first Grunge band, and not the first band to move away from the glam rock/hair band sound.

Soundgarden, while not the first, were the biggest band by far of the first wave of Grunge, Nirvana was in a 2nd wave with Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains and others.

As for the first big band after the hair band wave, I give Guns credit for that, thus while i dont think they get their due. Without guns we dont have Grunge imo.
Maybe. I can appreciate when bands are influential.

But their actual music just doesn’t do it for me.

I am not taking anything away from the cusp Gen X bands who are in. Definitely went through a phase for both Gn'R as well as Duran Duran. The Cure are also in that category of late Boomer age but huge among Gen Xers in their prime.

To add to that initial list of Gen X musicians, I'd nominate Snoop Dog, Alice in Chains, OutKast, No Doubt, Fugees, and probably Linkin Park despite not being a huge fan personally.

I am actually a huge fan of every group in that list. But almost all of them would piss me off because no way are they old enough bands to qualify. Bands from my 20's should not be allowed in, I aint that fucking old yet, lol

But great list for sure. My kids who are huge music fans, think 90's music in general is the best and 80's music has a tendency to be weird. They are 18 and 14, but not typical. For example my 14 year old son's favorite band is Pink Floyd (i am not a huge fan) and Nirvana and is now going through a Doors faze wo imo were way ahead of their time.

Looking back, as much as l love me some 80's bands, the 90's was much better music and I agree, criminally under represented in the HOF

I will never argue musical taste. There are huge bands who I am very meh on. I cant stand most folk music including Petty and Dylan and even Pink Floyd who is borderline Folk, more psychedelic, but still not my favorite.

Either way, Axl is a huge asshole, i know a ton of people who knew him because i lived in the town he grew up in for over a decade. He was an asshole before he got famous, and had a huge rivalry with Shannon Hoon who grew up in the Lafayette area in the 80's too, lol Everyone loves Hoon, hates Axl that knew them both. Well not everyone, Izzy didnt until later, but most, lol

My wife got to see Blind Melon live a few months before Hoon died, and I'm still extremely jealous.

I've been on a INXS kick lately. Don't think they'll ever make it into the Rock Hall. But they put out some great tunes with Hutchence
Its funny, I really liked INXS back in the day...but cant stand U2, i top 10 of all time band who i would say is a similar genre.

When is Dave Mathews Band getting in?

I probably stopped listening to DMB after I turned 25. My tastes changed a bit, and also it seems like it is popular to not like them. Had not listened to them in years.

A few days ago I listened to their first album and it is really good. The first three are really good. The ones after are all at least decent.

Looking at their Wikipage it appears that they are one of the most successful bands of the past 30 years. The only band to have seven consecutive #1 albums, and are in the top three of tickets sold in the past 20 years. Plus 35 million albums sold, 14 Grammy nominations, on of the best live bands ever, etc., etc.

Saw they did not make it on their first year of eligibility.

So what's the consensus here? Do we like them? Or are they still too fratty?

Saw them long ago before their widespread fame and just didn't care for them. It's his voice and attitude that rubbed me the wrong way. I've seen him twice since at FarmAid events, solo, and didn't change my opinion. DMB sure have plenty of passionate fans, though, and enough success that it'd be hard to get worked up if they got inducted.

Dave Matthews Band is annoying because their legion of fans are annoying. Their fans are always 14 - 20 years old. It’s what you listen to and talk about listening to when you want to seem discerning, musically. Funny thing though, their music is completely forgettable.

They will eventually get in. They had multi-generational appeal in the late 90s. You could play the music with your parents and little brother and nobody would complain.

I wonder if Dave's South African heritage led to some hesitancy from the nominating committee. Matthews the man seems like an inoffensive and good person, but some people may bring up his Apartheid childhood. Putting Dave in as the first African-born artist would be sticky.

Anyways, he's a good example of my concern that the nominating committee has displayed bias towards pushing mediocre acts from the Baby Boomer generation rather than moving on to the best Gen X had to offer.

The most Gen X thing ever.

Still overlooked after all these years.

I am not a DMB fan, never listened to them on purpose....but its insane they didnt get in. They have a legion of fans, huge success, and a long career.

It seems to me some of these voters are trying to be the smartest voter in the room and no really voting in those who deserves it. Its worse than MLB hall of fame voiting at times.

14-20? I always thought of their fans as 18-25. All college chicks and bro's and dudes....but i am not a DMB expert. But they have a legion of fans as you said, if that doesnt get you in, what does?
