Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They will eventually get in. They had multi-generational appeal in the late 90s. You could play the music with your parents and little brother and nobody would complain.

I wonder if Dave's South African heritage led to some hesitancy from the nominating committee. Matthews the man seems like an inoffensive and good person, but some people may bring up his Apartheid childhood. Putting Dave in as the first African-born artist would be sticky.

Anyways, he's a good example of my concern that the nominating committee has displayed bias towards pushing mediocre acts from the Baby Boomer generation rather than moving on to the best Gen X had to offer.

So are you saying not to let Steve Nash into the hall because he was born in South Africa? I know you are just saying its a maybe, but I doubt where he was born has anything to do with it, its because he is a cross between a folk singer and a boy band and some voters dont like his music and over think this shit.

It is interesting because Matthews' family fled South Africa because they didn't want him serving in the South African Army.

Service was compulsory at 18 and they didn't want him as part of Apartheid's biggest pillar of support.

Further irony is that DMB is 3/5s Black and 4/5s African-American.

14-20? I always thought of their fans as 18-25. All college chicks and bro's and dudes....but i am not a DMB expert. But they have a legion of fans as you said, if that doesnt get you in, what does?
Why have DMB and those 30 years of intense success when you can have the... Zombies!

They had three hit singles and were big for at least five years!

Or, or, T-Rex! They dominated the glam-folk circuit for just over half a decade!

Only Boomers know good music!

I called it a "maybe" because once DMB started creeping up on eligibility, they started pushing Fela Kuti hard.

We all know that African beats are the basis of modern popular music, so I saw pushing Kuti as a way to get in front of the "first African musician in R&RHOF is a white guy from South Africa" narrative.

And just as likely: The nominating committee is just Baby Boomer centric and this didn't occur at all when they selected boring acts like Carly Simon and Pat Benatar over yet another Gen X defining rock band.

I think its mostly the Boomer thing for sure.

Not at all out of character for music writers of that generation and their endless navel gazing in general (Grunge is awful! Cheap Trick forever!), or that institution in particular.

3/5s black??

3/5s black??
The drummer, saxophonist and fiddler.

Dave and the bassist are white.

Though violinist Boyd Tinsley was later fired during MeToo after sexual assault allegations and saxophonist LeRoi Moore died in 2008 in an ATV accident.

Irony, out of all the musicians to not be black its the bassist? lol
Stefan Lessard is a little nerdy white guy who vaguely sounds like Pauly Shore.

He joined the band at 16 and had to be snuck into the bars to play with the band.

I am trying not to use your knowledge of DMB as proof that all of their male fans are gay.

I keep telling myself that Sebastian is ex military, bad ass guy, and not a stereotype, but your knowledge of DMB is really making that hard to believe right now.

Well, as I said, I started to listen to them again about a week ago after about a decade's break.

I read the Wikipedia entry to support the case that their omission from the Hall of Fame is odd.

From my experience, admittedly it has been 20 years since I have been to a DMB concert, and in passing, most gays emphatically dislike DMB.

Way to take my joke post and make it serious.

My 14 year old son is gay and hates them too. His favorite bands are Nirvana, Pink Floyd and really starting to like the Doors. And yes, he does like some show tunes, lol...but i was only joking,

Yes drummer and hall of fame member Allan White died. Not the biggest yes fan, think of them as a 70's band although there biggest hit Owner of a Lonely Heart was an early 80's hit.

Dave Matthews Band is annoying because their legion of fans are annoying. Their fans are always 14 - 20 years old. It’s what you listen to and talk about listening to when you want to seem discerning, musically. Funny thing though, their music is completely forgettable.

I think the same way, and I think that's a general issue for me with most jam bands. They can sound really interesting in smaller doses, but in large doses, there needs to be a party-ish atmosphere to keep up the interest. There isn't enough range in dynamics and tempo to hold my attention. Dave Matthews' rhythm guitar playing is as repetitive as fuck to my ears..

That being said, they are easily the most successful jam band since the Grateful Dead ( who I also didn't like for the same reasons), and they helped popularize the incorporation of some instruments you generally don't see in rock music. So to me, they should be in.

Although personally, they sound to me like the lame frat boy version of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones....I keed! I keed!

Or not.

I agree with respect to those two nominees. However, boomer music does have an objective advantage in that they were the first generation of true rock and roll. Most of the great boomer bands drew from old blues and jazz musicians, and sometimes even classical music, to create a newer sound. It's a lot easier to be innovative when you're the first ones doing it. Of course, that argument gets weaker when you start looking at artists like Pat Benatar, etc., Who may have been popular, but did not really add anything innovative to the genre as a whole.

In contrast, a lot of later music is essentially "second generation", and it is more difficult to find unique sounds that have not been explored already. Doesn't mean they can't innovate and create new musical forms. It's just tougher to do when you're not the first.
