Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They're a band I really want to see... I have not gotten a chance.

Radiohead is a cool band because, like U2 and Coldplay, they seem to really like to pain a picture when they play live. It looks like an incredibly aesthetically pleasing show. But frankly, as a fan of both U2 and Coldplay, I just think Radiohead is comprised of better musicians.
Doesn't translate to a great show. Super expensive for what you get.

Everyone's different tho, I prefer a pit

Bumped because the Rock HOF is synonymous with Cleveland, the ceremony will be in Cleveland .. and the selection committee has gone mental. It seemed like they created a more open process by creating a fan ballot for entry into the Hall. This seemed like a good idea to drum up more visitors right?

But then the R&RHOF made a hard right turn and ignored the popular vote. The top two vote getters are Dave Matthews Band and Pat Benatar. Two legitimate rockers in an era where "rock" is being applied loosely as the taste of modern popular music changes. Neither received the nod, and neither did fourth place finisher Soundgarden or fifth place finisher Judas Priest.

I can't say I have a problem with the nominees who made it in: Doobie Brothers played legit rock before going more yacht rock with Micheal McDonald, Whitney Houston should be in if Madonna and Janet Jackson are in, Depeche Mode might be dance music but they are played on rock stations. I even applaud them for getting Nine Inch Nails inducted in Cleveland where Trent Reznor got his start. If you are going to bend the rules, do it for NIN in Cleveland.

But it seems like they are shoehorning a lot of dead people into the Cleveland induction because they would draw less of a crowd. Whitney, T Rex, and Notorious BIG can't perform from the afterlife. It feels like they are saving better performances for another venue. And the biggest issue: they just rendered the popular vote toothless and a waste of time.

Michael McDonald fucking SUCKS

He is a karmic counterpoint to how much ass Jeff "Skunk" Baxter kicks. Sure they lost the better frontman in Tim Johnston and made soft rock...

...but you get Skunk.

He fucking destroyed everything that made the Doobies good. The ultimate yacht rock douchebag.

Close contest between him and Dennis DeYoung for most annoying vocalist.

...and yet, while he most certainly took away the hard rock edge of the band, they suddenly became popular with R&B stations. He sounded like a 55 year old black guy and had great chemistry with the ex-bassist Tiran Porter's baritone. He is one of like four white dudes to appear on the sitcom "What's Happening" starring Junior Walker. The degree of difficulty on all of this is impressive, even if his music was not as good for me personally. I'm a Tim Johnston supporter. China Grove for life.

Billy Corgan? Tiny Tim?

I personally voted for both DMB and Benetar. I could not believe they weren't already in.. Judas Preist over Dave Matthews?? That simply cannot be justified..

Michael McDonald fucking SUCKS
I am both a Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan fan. Michael M changed both bands music because he is a great vocalist. Bands evolve, and I think the change extended the Doobie Brothers repertoire. But to each his own...

Am I only one who think DMB sucks?

No.

For me, they're like most jam bands. One song may be fine, but after that they all blend together and sound the same. I suppose it may be completely different if you're at one of their shows and partying, but just listening...no thanks.

Dave Matthews Band is the late 1990s and early 2000s in musical and human form. Do you have a friend who wears cargo shorts with oversized pockets? Does he still wear a braided belt with his jeans? I bet you have talked to him about changing with the times, but he isn't going to change.

That's a Dave Matthews Band fan.

I will say that musical tastes are very personal, so what is good and interesting to one person may be tedious or just noise to someone else. But I suppose at the level of what the Hall of Fame is at least supposed to be, you've got to try to objectify at least some qualities of the music.
