Round 3 - Pick 98 - Siaki Ika, DT, Baylor

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've been a Siaki Ika downer--on record as saying I wouldn't have taken him there. So, here's how I'd respond to my own argument with the optimist's take:

Siaki Ika will be a force in the middle who requires two men to block. He's an immovable object in the run game, and defense in the NFL often boils down to a numbers game.

If you can defend the run with fewer players, that allows you to be better against the pass. If you can keep two safeties back instead of bringing one down into the box, that gives you an advantage against what really matters in the modern NFL--the passing game.

So yeah, OOTRATQ, you might be right that Ika won't ever be able to rush the passer, but your vision is too myopic. You're missing the bigger picture. His strength in the run game allows our entire defense to be better against the pass.

You obviously missed the memo that he is now going to be a Ferrari. A very, very large Ferrari.

Let's start the articles now about how Dawand Jones and Siaki Ika are in the best shape of their lives. They've each slimmed down. Meanwhile, everyone else in the building has added 15 pounds of muscle. Anyone with a knee injury not only looks 100%, but claims they feel better today than they did before the injury.

Anything else I missed?

Been studying the playbook harder than ever and really understands the offense ?

I think you just need a few "dawg pound" references in there and we can fire this one off...

All valid points.

The one of those I think really does matter is weight, though obviously it would take something more specific and reliable than a bare claim that they've "slimmed down."

I'd go so far as to say that if there isn't any evidence that they lost weight by training camp, that's a red flag. Especially in the case of Jones. And if he's actually gained weight between the end of the college season and beginning of training camp, 90% chance it'll end up being a wasted pick.

Fatties who won't lose weight never work out.

Maybe we will hear Deshaun is on the Cody Kessler oatmeal and baby carrots diet.

I mean, at this point I'm dumping my cylinder of Quaker Oatmeal down the garbage disposal to make sure I don't end up like Cody Kessler someday.

"Kessler said he feels stronger and is throwing harder without any more effort."

This falls right in line with the @Out of the Rafters at the Q point about offseason media -- every fat player has lost 20 pounds, every skinny player has gained 15 (solid muscle, no doubt), every QB has a better understanding of the playbook, and so on. All the children are above average.
