The Rule 5 draft has many confusing elements, so I’ll start with questions that I have myself.

Once a player is selected from your list of eligible players, do you then get to protect another player? I believe that’s how it works but am not 100% sure.

The draft is only two rounds, correct?

The minor league phase is even more confusing. You can draft players who are not on a AAA roster but also meet the criteria for the major league phase of the draft? So these picks are almost exclusively organizational filler guys.

To me, it looks like we’ll most likely lose two guys in the major league phase, at most.

Can someone post an accurate list here of guys who are eligible to be taken, if not protected.

I will try to chime in with additional info this weekend.

But to answer some items from your first post: you are confusing expansion drafts with the Rule 5.
  • CLE/ Another MLB teams submits its 40 man roster by mid November (IIRC due date is 11/19/21 this year).
  • R5 draft takes place at the end of the Winter Meetings in December 2021.
  • There is no adding of players after a player is selected from your "eligible to be taken group".
  • I am aware of no limit on players lost/ taken. If 20 players are taken by MLB teams in the major league portion of the R5, all 20 could be selected from the same organization if the players are eligible to be taken and are left unprotected (not on the 40 man roster).
  • There is no real limit to Rounds in the MLB phase of the R5 but once a team has a full 40 man roster or passes on making a selection, they cannot make another selection.
  • Minor league lists and draft phases are different. Those team lists are normally not published. Teams not participating in the major league R5 phase are still able to participate in the minor league phases..

Pitchers that are R5 eligible:

Morris
Pilkington
Cantillo
Scott
Broom

There are others that are not a concern.

Position players:

Freeman
Valera
Rocchio
Lavastida
Palacios
Tena
Noel
Bracho
Kwan
O Gonzalez
Benson
Planez

Again, there are others who are of no concern.

I think there is nearly universal agreement that we have to keep seven.

Morris
Pilkington
Cantillo
Freeman
Valera
Rocchio
Lavastida

After that, opinions diverge.

I would add Aaron Pinto to the pitcher list. I don't see us protecting him but he might get a bite.

Also, I think Palacios is a lock for a roster spot, Tena probably is as well. Ogonz, Kwan and Benson are the most bubbly of the rest with Kwan locking up a spot if he plays out AAA they way he played in Akron. Bracho is defensively challenged and had a rough year at the plate. Noel and Planez are probably still too raw.

On a related note - does anyone know if there is a resource where I can see the performances for all the rule 5 picks taken last time around? I assume Stephan has to be one of the best if not thee best

& the contribution from @LL3 clearly shows 3 Yankee players taken in Round 1 2020, confirming a team could lose more than 2 players..
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A name to remember on the eligible list: RHP Jerson Ramirez..

Pitchers, especially those that can be used in relief roles, seem to be R5 targets on a regular basis..
The overall eligible player list for the draft will be quite large...

The minor league portion may he pretty interesting too.

Its the Yankees, it doesnt prove anything except other teams hate the Yankees...as well they should, lol.

Coming up with the 40 man roster has to be causing some gray hairs in the front office. Can we protect more than 7 guys?

locks are:
Valera
Freeman
Cantillo
Rocchio
Lavastida
Morris

I think Palacios is close to a lock. Pilkington I don’t think is a lock. Tena and Noel are pretty far away. Kwan and Oscar Gonzalez are outfielders that are close to ready, but are they worth protecting? Benson is a former top draft pick, do we risk the embarrassment of him succeeding with another organization (I would risk it)?

Tons of tough choices.

I expect one or two trades to clear some of these bubble guys out, to prevent losing them for nothing.

Do we really want to see Oscar G walk away from at this point? He will be 24 for all of 2022 and just entering his "prime"... Sure he has warts, but so does Harold.

Steven Kwan has completely changed the landscape and his profile is very draftable. Luckily for us I think Benson still strikes out/streaks too much, but drafting him and trying to acquire his complete rights would be a savvy move..
