Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
1. I still am being told he’s not eligible.

2. If he is in fact eligible and they lose him, oh well. I don’t think he’s currently a big leaguer and is going to struggle. He’s also going to be nearly unplayable in the OF at the MLB level right now. Has the makings of a guy offered for return really quickly.

Any further determination on Jerson Ramirez??

Nada, everyone is still on vacation and obviously there is a good chance it’s a bit more permanent in a few days.

I wouldn’t worry about them potentially losing him though. Would be the most surprising pick in the Rule 5, he’s a ways away.

Now with the fact Arb deadline is moved up, we will see if we keep Zimmer or not since he is arb eligible... We also may sign Hedges to a two year deal at a lower than projected number by sources.

Does anyone have the list of Cubs hitters available for the Rule 5? Our new hitting coach may want us to bring someone in from the organization that he had an eye on. Plus we are low on arms, so Stephan type of move cannot be ruled out... So someone like LHP Seth Corry of the Giants could easily be a target. RHP Tahnaj Thomas, who we traded to the Pirates also could look good as a reliever for a season as well. Neither guys has the best of commands, but maybe in Cleveland they can correct that.
I would not characterize CLE as being "low on arms". There are a handful of pitching options that are not on the 40 man (either R5 eligible or not).

Additionally some roles that are not already in the system (like a veteran for the bullpen previous examples are Blake Parker/ Bryan Shaw) will not be filled via the R5.

Low on arms meant the actual number on the 40 man roster. Swapping Zimmer for a Stephan in a sense, could be a way they go in the Rule 5 draft...

I dont think any of us expect Stephan last season at all so they aren't afraid to do it...

Edit: side note from an earlier post... I don't think Cubs have any bats worth even looking at in the Rule 5, so we can Rule that one out...

I will go along with Bimbo's comments regarding Oscar G's rule 5 eligibility, but if he is eligible I doubt he gets picked, unless a NL team is speculating on a DH type... The fact Daniel Johnson went unclaimed, seems to bolster the likelihood he doesn't get picked if that is even possible.

Even if he was, why would a team tie itself up to keep him on their 26 roster all year when they had the chance to put him on their 40? He was free to sign with anyone for a week.

Doesn't make sense and writers (and posters) still mentioning Gonzalez as potential R5 loss are embarrassing themselves for their cluelessness about the process.

Just as a point of reference: there is a separate player protection list for the minor league portion of the R5 draft. That list is normally not released to the public (I have seen 2 lists of protected players for teams over the last 20 years).

Players selected in the minor league R5 are completely gone. There is no requirement to keep the selected player at any specific level & no return to former team mechanism.

Just because I am bored and sitting down with a heating pad on my back (versus doing chores outside), I looked at the possible protective list using Roster Resources ... may have missed a few (as tondo had 50). Yet, the list is something like below (I have 46 ... each team can protect 38 in each AAA and AA and a few like Leon and Santos could have signed anywhere as NRI so do we really need to protect them? And then people like Oscar and Ramirez may not be eligible per Bimbo). Of this list, the young catchers, some pitchers, Bracho and Benson stand out ....

Catchers (7) – Leon, Collins, Rivera, Melendez, Ramirez, Paz, Planchart

1B (2)– Brooks, Engleman

2B (1) – Bracho

3B (3) Fermin, Nova, Lopez

SS (2) M Gonzalez, Schneemann

OF(9) – Johnson, O Gonzalez, Call, Benson, Planez, J Rodriquez, Holmes, S Rodriquez, Roller

SP (9) – Scott, Tully, McCarty, Royalty, Lingos, Cantillo, McCarthy, Burgos, Turner, A Young

RP (13) - Garza, Santos, Broom, Pinto, Mota, Krauth, Miednik, Pontecelli, Clemmer, Alvarez, Gallagher, Herrin, Ramirez

Of course, we will lose some but we are getting too many MIFs and SP stacked up in the minors anyways ... so the key is who the FO wants to move from SP to RP and then who is getting passed over like a Krauth or other or a Schneemann. And, we may want to leave a spot or two open so that we can select a 1B or power OF to fill some holes in the upper levels.

I am not too worried about this part of the draft as nothing usually amounts to anything impactful. But, it is just interesting to see how it may work.

Key is who they see as SP for AAA and AA -Morgan, Myers, Pilkington, Battenfield, Morris, Cantillo, Allen, Gaddis, Curry and others like Scott, Tully, Royalty, Espino, Vargas, Hankins, McCarthy, Burns, Burgos -- some fringe starters like Burgos, Tully, Royalty, Scott are going have to be pushed to the pen or (them or other RP cut loose).

I thought players on AAA rosters are not eligible for the minor league portion of the rule 5 draft.

All minor league players entering their last year of club control are automatically at higher risk. That includes all 2016 draftees, so G. Collins, while a decent player is probably left exposed with Leon, Rivera and Lavastida ready for AAA.

Same for Krauth, and possibly one or both of Call/T. Brooks and S. Arias/Clemmer. I think Roller is gone too.

Think we are saying same thing. There are 3 phases of this draft for those players who satisfy rule 5 criteria
Phase 1 - 40 man mlb protection
Phase 2 - AAA phase where you can add 38 players to AAA list to be protected ... note, this is more than a regular AAA roster and thus is not tied to that regular season roster as several AAA players are also on 40 man ... and clubs can also designate someone from AAA to AA rosters when ever. Thus, it is just to protect 78 players from other teams (as Tondo says, usually for 1 or 2 more years till milb free agency kicks in anyways).
Phase 3 - AA phase where you can add 38 more players to be protected so a team is now at 40+38+38 and why no one has been selected in AA phase since 1 player in 2015.

Any player not Rule 5 eligible, would probably not be on these lists other than 40 man roster (as MT says, we never see these lists anyways). For example, Allen Jr pitched in AA but doesn’t need protection yet. So, would Guardians be forced to keep him on AA list, even though there probably is room (116 players by then)? AAA list is different story .... but teams move players between their teams all the time.

Do you happen to know who that one player from 2015 is? That has me interested how they turned out.
