Rule 5 draft talk

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If they can get him healthy he has a good chance to get to the MLB level. He is still incredibly raw, only 29 IP as a pro to this point. I like the developmental staffs chances of getting him healthy and mechanically sound to where he will remain healthy.

Yet, what are the odds of coming back fully from 2nd TJ surgery? It's the reason that he was available. Good lotto ticket as it has high upside with low chance -- what you look for in this draft. It looks like only a handful of pitchers have done it. In article about Clevinger... says "The newspaper cited two success stories in Clevinger’s cohort: Nathan Eovaldi and Capuano." I guess Rassmusen is also a recent additition. Good luck to Sabrowski. Reliever is surely the way to go as he is already 24 and will have 2023/24 seasons to try to break in before minor league FA hits. And, I have said, many of our starters will need to transition anyway to find room to be called up.

Considering how well his arm has responded and that he is already throwing off the mound and throwing up to 90 already in the same calendar year as the surgery, I would say high.

He went to the right organization to get him to stay healthy too.

How well he's throwing today is good news.. how he feels in the morning after letting loose for 20+ pitches will be the determining act..

The luck needed to keep an arm healthy while doing the unnatural act of throwing a baseball overhand is best when nature allows.. For Sadowski, he doesn't have that kind of luck.. He gets to learn how to remain healthy.. and the Cleveland staff is about as good as anyone at teaching that skill. Being a lefty with the kind of stuff Sadowski is supposed to have.. makes the gamble (investing the time and effort into getting him and helping him stay healthy) all the more worthwhile.. As far as recreating his delivery and motion.. a la Aaron Civale.. IDK if that's in the cards. It worked for Civale, but, it's unknown if the same approach has a chance of creating a better, healthier, outcome for Sadowski. Realistically, a change in delivery and motion offers the chance that it will skew the upward trajectory Sadowski was on and had achieved to unreproducible and negative.. (IOW.. what was done with Civale is not a "cookie cutter" methodology).. We'll see..

He's been throwing for almost a month.

Obviously you can't replicate game reps, but that timeline and how much he will be able to build his arm between now and when he is back in games is big for him.

Also, since we don't have much med history on him with him being in a different organization until yesterday, I am curious if he had a legit Tommy John or something else. The timeline doesn't match for a true TJ recovery.

Forgot this edit: it's Erik with a "k" Sabrowski.. a misspelling from earlier..

From the media search.. June 2017, when he was drafted by the padres in the mid-teens round.. he pitched a bit but had been experiencing a sore elbow.. and hadn't gotten a clear idea if the treatment/therapy program he was working with was helping.. He wasn't showing progress.. So.. that was when the first Tommy John Surgery was indicated..

By October of 2019, he was just starting to throw to live hitters (game reps) and was feeling good..damn good in fact.. Until he was again beset with the need for surgery.. That occured in October of 2021, again, after he had a few outings. The belief is that he will miss the entire 2022 season.. That may be true.. and the Guardians medical staff almost ALWAYS errs on the side of abundant caution.. but, based on what is being written about this Canadian, he's not one for lolligagging...

I think your assessment of him as a future BP arm is accurate.. he has the kind of stuff to start.. but, in order to get to the upper levels of baseball, he's going to need to focus on being a reliever.. and that's not a bad thing...

Isn't there a couple versions of TJ these days?

The traditional/common one and the partial tear one? If you are able to find out you know we'd love to hear it.

Criz... I think you're referring to Platelette Rich Plasm or Stem Cell injections.. these are indicated when the UCL is only partially torn.. As long as the pain threshhold can be managed, it's a three to four month rehabilitation for these "newer" procedures.. Simply stated..they work..but not as effectively, long term, as UCL reconstruction. There are outliers to every surgical path.. The key to not being reinjured (like we're discussion with Erik Sabrowski) is getting the extension & looseness of the elbow during the throwing motion to a minimum.. i.e. less variability of the motion.

It's sometimes described as being a pitcher instead of a thrower..

Thanks Gson, I would call that the 3rd option (Tanaka?)- here is an article about the version I was referencing.

Seems like teams will be looking to maybe cancel the Rule 5... though that's not exactly fair to some teams in a way since they lost players because they had to protect prospects in the Rule 5... I mean we lost Perez, Nelson and Mejia etc. I mean the roster changed completely around to prepare for the Rule 5. Also I don't see why the players would want it canceled since it would allow them to get MLB spots...

Ok... 1st things first..
The move is basically done & the internet is now setup so I can spend the weekend reading a weeks worth of posts to catch up & then chime in where needed..

As for Rule 5 talk about being cancelled, this was thrown out as a possibility once the lockout started.
It all comes down to timing. A short lockout ending in January or early February, the likelihood of having the Rule 5 is much higher.
Now that the lockout is already into March (& possibly going much longer), cancelling for 1 year makes sense so that players can be settled (knowing where they are going/ living/ training) and getting ready for the season ASAP once an agreement is reached.

I think it’s a little overblown. You have had players go to winter ball before Rule 5. You can also take you 4-5 guys that you are worried about being poached and have them throw hit during the 1st hour of practice in simulated type games then hide them in a back field once you allow opponent scouts in to scout your other ST games.

And, if it was that big of deal, just do the thing now and don’t allow any other roster moves or trades between teams .... doubt after all this that players will say it’s okay for owners not to follow the CBA to the letter on having a draft each year.

The ESPN article said the MLBPA possibly could agree to it because there won’t be a lot of time for free agent negotiations, and they would want as many MLB free agents to find MLB roster spots instead of teams using some of the 26 roster spots in Rule 5 guys, who already have a spot in organizations.
