Now I don't know how true this is, but we all know Boomer is a Maryland Alumni. Could be a rumor, but where there is smoke there is fire. Boomer claims ESPN offered 5 million more per team to bring in Syracuse and Pitt. There goes our dreams of getting into The ACC Conference. The ACC didn't expand to be safe, they expanded to kill The Big East NBC deal.

I know not many of you care about Big East football. But it is types of shady deals like this that are killing college sports.

Anyone with legal knowledge think there is any possibility that a lawsuit could be construed over this? I mean the Big East turned down a few offers and was positioning themselves for a big time deal worth much more than the current ACC deal. It seems like ESPN is posturing in order to remove the likes of NBC and Versus from competition.

Why WOULDN'T they try to stop this?

Nobody is going to say anything to them, much like their attacks on Ohio State, while schools like Oregon and Auburn remain under investigation with almost ZERO media coverage.

The Big East has a $200 million dollar deal with ESPN/ABC, but only until 2013. They have the ACC locked in over 12 years for $1.86 billion. Even if it is peanuts compared to what they give other leagues, ESPN believes they control the sports world and want to demonstrate their authority.

You know the old saying, "Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel"

They'll keep pushing for this, and pushing and pushing...Until they change the opinion of the casual fan to anything they want.

Thank god not all of us are BSPN clones. Any shady crap that is mentioned about them would not be shocking to me.

Fuck ESPN. Seriously. I still watch Around the Horn and PTI occasionally. Not anymore. Any more crap from this POS network and I'll stop watching MNF. They have too much power.

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise. This doesn't surprise me at all

Sucks for my Rutgers. I really thought they had a chance at going to the ACC or the Big 10(12)

Saw a glimpse of a report off of BearcatLair.com and Bears Truth. Basically the report stated that Cincinnati, TCU, WVU, Louisville, and BYU is close to moving to the Big 12. Baylor's Bears Truth website even goes one step farther claiming BYU will announce Saturday they will accept the Big 12 invite. Louisville may also accept their invite on Saturday. If this happens, then the Big East is going to collapse as a football conference. UCONN will join the ACC and will fight the Big Ten for Rutgers. ECU could be in the mix for the ACC, however, that is probably down the line a little. Sorry I cannot post the articles since they are membership required.

Also my opinion on the OP's question is that the Big East messed up when VT, Miami, BC, and Temple left. Even though at the time Temple was atrocious, the problem that was created was the Big East never acted on trying to replace those schools. It also doesn't help when the conference struggles in BCS games.

EDIT: Big East did replace those schools with UCONN (football was added in '04), USF, Louisville, and Cincinnati after Miami (FL), BC, VT, and Temple left. I was trying to point out they should have been more aggressive adding more schools to have championship game. That right there could have maintained some stability within the current conference members and they may not be in the mess they are in now.

The whole problem is that there are eight basketball only schools in the Big East. Adding more teams makes the basketball conference extremely large. I think another reason Pitt and 'Cuse left was that the commishioner was catering towards Providence instead of the greater good of the league as a whole. A lot of teams including Cincinnati feel unsafe because the commish didn't do what needed to be done (i.e. kick Providence and Depaul out and get some more football members).

Exactly, stability was also a concern factor for Big East schools with football programs. 'Cuse and Pitt believed John Marinatto was not doing enough to help Big East football which led to their move. However, with your previous statement, the Big East could have gotten schools that would be only football members if the conference did not want to expand number if teams for basketball and other sports. Now getting high quality programs to only join as a only football member might be tough. The only schools that come to mind that could make that move are Army, Navy, and Temple that are already established FBS programs. Villanova was offered to make the jump to join the Big East for all sports, but was noncommittal. Ironic it was Pitts president that made a statement on how they would refuse to let Villanova into Big East football because of the size of their football stadium.
