Set Free: Dante Exum

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This thread has quite a range of opinions. From defensively elite compliments to 'he should be benched for Brandon Knight'.

He's a great fit on this roster imo, I would sign him to an extension. Still only 25, he's got a lot of good years left in him.
The only issue is that he might struggle to crack the rotation if everyone's healthy. Of course, hard to tell who's going to be on the roster next season, but the guard/wing rotation is already pretty deep - and there's a pretty good chance the Cavs will add another draft pick there as well.

Kevin Porter or Delly are only guys that would take his minutes as we need Exum as a ballhandler. Delly is questionable right now, but no way after that defensive clinic does Delly get the nod. Porter we just have to assume is out until he isn't.

It would need to be cheap. KPG & Okoro are similar sized and also capable of being elite defenders and both are much better offensively. Exum can handle the ball, but so can Sexton, KPG, Dotson, and Garland. If he's a good locker room guy he's worth keeping around, but you can't let him take up much of the salary cap we are going to need as these talented young guys come off of their rookie deals.

It isn't an either/or thing. We have Okoro and KPJ under contract for four years - we surely could afford to sign Exum to a deal that would end at the same time we'd have to extend either of them.

There are a lot of question marks around KPJ right now, and it never hurts to have a guy like Exum in the rotation anyway.

I think this level of defense means you keep him around, even if he isn't available all the time, or doesn't work for every matchup. I imagine he can be had on a cheap contract similar to Dotson's. He can be a situational defender/backup point.

I can't imagine he has a lot of trade value. I value him more than a 2nd rounder, unless what is coming back is a good player or maybe a young guys with upside. I would trade him for Bagley for instance, but that seems far fetched.

Heard the terrible news and feel sorry for the guy. Was a fan of his when he got drafted.

If there is a trade to be had with his salary, we should definitely just trade him away and sign him next off season if we want him back. His 3 pt shooting will hold him back from getting anything more than vets minimum. I don't think the plan is to use him if all 4 young wing players are healthy. It more important to develop Sexton so he can play some time at PG to make Sexland work long term.

I think Exum is more of a test subject to see if a player of his size and skill set can make Sexton and Garland work better. More of a plan B if Sexton and Garland can't handle all 48 minutes of the PG duties. If they have to go to that plan B, I think they invest in a better version of Exum in the draft in the future. Maybe the give Exum a short term contract next offseason to hold them over.

I call him Mr. Glass

He is too injury prone to re-sign, trade him at the deadline for an asset if possible given he’s an expiring. Can just sign MCW in free agency and get the same production without the injuries
