Probably helps us maintain his g league rights.
There is this: https://gleague.nba.com/faq/ -- Teams can tab up to 4 training camp waivers as "affiliate players"
But two things--
1) usually teams keep the player on the roster through training camp.
2) https://gleague.nba.com/nba-draft-rights-players/ - The “draft rights player” rule allows NBA G League teams to directly acquire players on their NBA parent club’s draft list, bypassing the usual NBA G League player selection processes, including the NBA G League Draft and the in-season waiver wire.
So it's confusing to me.
Maybe this was more like Phil Dawson's situation and they just wanted to let him retire as a Cavalier?
My guess is the Cavs know they want him on the Canton Charge but know that they don't want him for the 15th roster spot or a two-way spot. I personally don't think we will fill the 15th roster spot because it gives Koby roster flexibility for trades. Add that to the new staff and having alot of rookies, Pointer probably just didn't make sense to work with during training camp.
Maybe they want to stash Pointer so they can call him up in the second half of the season if they get rid of TT, Henson, Delly, Knight, and Clarkson.
Probably the biggest what if in basketball history.
