Sling TV

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How is that a solution at all? I stream to 3 different TVs in my house. That absolutely cannot handle streaming 1080p to that many devices, let alone one device. Can you even run a Plex Media Server from that? I have a small powered USB hub that all my hard drives are connected to, and that runs to my computer.

I'm not a Linux user, in fact I fucking loathe it. I hate RAID fucking set ups. OH BOY, WHEN ONE HARD DRIVE FAILS, I LOSE 4 HARD DRIVES WORTH OF DATA. Stupidest fucking thing ever. I don't care what performance boosts you get from it.

Depends on what you're doing.

It certainly can work as a NAS Samba solution for 3 devices, no problem.

But if you're transcoding to 3 devices then no, you'd need something more substantial; but Jesus why on Earth would you want to do this for 3 devices simultaneously?

If I'm streaming to three devices, I'd have reencoded my library to a format compatible with the streaming device, rather than rely on transcoding on the fly.

Definitely.

If any of the devices are USB 2.0, you're USB bus is likely flooded.

Lol.. nvm then!

That's only true in the most basic RAID-0 configuration. Not for any of the others.

But without Linux it's kind of pointless, because none of this would be possible in Windows.

Yup, and I'm not switching to Linux. So, none of that does me any good. And no, the hub is USB 3.0 just like all my drives/ports on my PC. And for the most part, nothing transcodes to 3 devices simultaneously, as most can stream natively to my TV or Roku 3/Roku Stick.

But yeah, since this all requires switching to an OS that I can't stand, I'll pass. Any OS that requires 73 keystrokes to do one action is no OS that I want to use.

Anybody else here own an HTPC? Now I'm looking to build one... lol.

I have one that runs windows media center. Not sure what platform you're looking for

Yeah, I might run Windows Media Center in a VM, but I'm not too keen on using it as the primary OS. Would like to maybe run XBMC / SickBeard setup.

To be honest, I think my primary concern is portability.. How big is your setup? Would you consider it portable?

I wouldn't consider mine very portable, but I'm running it with a cable card and a pretty expensive build as i built it to be able to run 4k. Cable card is nice as I can watch hd cable anything I recorded over the xbox or another computer. Saves decent money. Plus I can record 4 shows at a time; which I've never used.

That does sound dope.

What interface is the cable card running over? You have a link to the device?

I have an HTPC upstairs in my house. I run XBMC on it (through windows). I previously tried using Linux and XBMC but my wife hates linux and I'm not really a huge fan. At some point I am going to try to use the XBMC thin client and see how that works out for me. My biggest issue with XBMC has been Netflix. There's no proprietary plug-in for this so you have to use a third-party plug-in and all of them for me have been awful. They all have bad compatibility and it always feels like square peg/round hole. The only reason I don't have a Roku or something similar for Netflix is because I wanted one solution for all of my video.

Other than that it's been great for me. I run my database off of my wife's pc downstairs. I download directly from dropbox websites such as movreel, 180upload, etc. Then I just move the files into the appropriate folders and XBMC automatically updates when I turn it on. Personally, I enjoy subtitles with everything I watch, and it's extremely easy to setup with XBMC. I will download a show like Better Call Saul and within an hour there will be subtitles available.

I have Netflix/Ballstreams/free Astraweb account (how the fuck have they still not noticed this after 3 years?) and that's all I need personally. I can get everything on Netflix on Usenet if I really wanted to, but I'm willing to pay the $7.99 a month for the convenience and to support what I think is an excellent service. I have a Zyxel NAS with 2x 3TB WD Red drives that has been running strong for a few years now, still has over 2 TB free, and streams to my bedroom PC, office TV, and living room (I use Kodi in all 3 rooms). I'm pretty much set.

My problem though is my girlfriend can't live without her fucking Bravo. I hate every program on that channel, but its her one vice. When she moves in I'm going to either have to get cable or hope SlingTV adds that channel :/

So Sling failed pretty badly tonight during The Walking Dead. Will be interesting to see if they can get some problems smoothed out by the finale next week. I really don't want to have to buy an Apple TV but it's looking like I might have to. Fuckity fuck fuck.
